1 There dwelt a man in Babylōn, called Jōakim: N/A
2 And he took a wife, whose name was Susanna, the daughter of Chelkias, a very beautiful woman, and fearing the Lord. N/A
3 Her parents also were righteous, and taught their daughter according to the law of Mōyses. N/A
4 Now Jōakim was a very rich man, and had an orchard joining unto his house: and the Judeans used to go to him; because he was more honourable than all. N/A
5 That same year two elders from the people were appointed to be judges, concerning whom the Master said, lawlessness came from Babylōn from elders who were judges, who seemed to govern the people. N/A
6 These spent much time at Jōakim’s house: and all that had any lawsuits came unto them. 6 And lawsuits from other cities came to them
8so that their lust was inflamed toward her. 8and when they lusted after her,
10 And they were both enamoured concerning her and they didn't tell one another of their pain. 11 For they were ashamed to admit their lust, that they desired to be intimate with her. 10 But both were enamoured concerning her, and one to the other did not conceal the evil that possessed them concerning her (nor did the woman know of this matter).
12 Yet they watched eagerly from day to day to see her. 12 And as dawn was breaking, they would come and outwit one another, being anxious who should appear to her first and should speak to her.
13 And the one said to the other, Please let us now go home: for it is dinner time. And after going out, they separated from one another 13 And look, according to her custom, she was walking around. And the one elder had already come, and look, the other arrived, and one questioned the other saying, “Why did you come out at dawn and not take me along?”
14 And turning back again they came to the same place; and after that they had asked one another the cause, they acknowledged their lust. Then they arranged a time, when they might be able to find her alone. 14 And they acknowledged to one another each his pain.
15 And it happened while they were watching for an appropriate day, she entered one time just as yesterday and the third day with only two girls and wanted to bathe in the orchard, because it was hot. 15 N/A
16 And no one was there except the two elders, who had been hidden and watching her. N/A
17 And she said to the girls, “Please bring me olive oil and soap, and shut the orchard doors so that I can bathe.” N/A
18 And they did as she said, and they shut the doors of the orchard and went out by the side doors to bring the things they had been commanded. And they did not see the elders, because they had been hidden. N/A
20 and said, “Look, the orchard doors are shut, and no one can see us, and we are in lust with you. Therefore, give your consent to us, and be with us N/A
21 But if not, we will testify against you that a young man was with you, and for this reason you sent the girls away from you.” N/A
22 And Susanna groaned and said, “Things are hard for me on all sides. For if I do this, it is death for me; if I do not, I will not escape out of your hands. 22 And the Judean woman said to them, “I know that if I do this, it is death for me, and if I do not, I will not escape out of your hands.
23 It is better for me to fall into your hands, and not do it, than to sin before the Lord.” 23 But it would be better for me to fall into your hands by not doing it than to sin before the Lord.”
24 And Sousanna shouted out with a loud voice, but the two elders also shouted against her. N/A
25 And after running, the one opened the orchard doors. N/A
26 So when the ones from the house heard the shouting in the orchard, they rushed in through the side door to see what had happened to her. N/A
27 But when the elders spoke their statements, the slaves were very ashamed, because a statement like this had never before been said about Susanna. N/A
28 And it happened on the next day, when the people gathered to her husband Jōakim, the two elders came, full of the lawless intent against Susanna, to have her put to death. So the lawless men turned away, uttering threats among themselves and lurked in ambush so that they might have her put to death. And when they came to the city synagogue, where they stayed, all the sons of Israel who were there deliberated.
29 And in the presence of the people they said, “Send for Susanna, daughter of Chelkias, who is the wife of Jōakim.” So they sent, 29 And when the two elders and judges stood up they said, “Send for Susanna daughter of Chelkias, who is the wife of Jōakim.” So they immediately called her.
31 Now Susanna was very dainty and beautiful in appearance. 31 Now the woman was very dainty.
32 Then the lawless ones ordered her to be uncovered (for she was veiled) so that they could be satisfied with her beauty. 32 And the lawless ones ordered her to uncover her in order that they could be satisfied with lust for her beauty.
33 But those who were with her and all who saw her began weeping. 33 And all those who were with her and all who knew her began weeping.
35 But while crying, she looked up into the sky, because her heart trusted upon the Lord. 35 But her heart trusted upon the Lord, her God, and after lifting her head, she wept, saying to herself, 35a“Oh Lord, everlasting God, you who know all things before their beginning, you know that I have not done what these lawless men are maliciously intending against me.” And the Lord heard her petition.
37 And a young man, who was hiding, came to her and lay with her.[3] 37 While we were going around the area, we saw this woman resting with a man. And while we stood, we saw them having sexual intercourse with each other.
38 But since we were in the corner of the orchard, when we saw the lawlessness, we ran to them. And they did not know that we stood there. Then we agreed together, saying, ‘Let’s learn who they are.’
39 And after seeing them having sexual intercourse, we were not able to control that man because he was stronger than we; and when he had opened the doors, he escaped. 39 And as we approached we recognized her, but the young man fled, disguised.
40 But when we had seized this woman, we asked who the young man was, 40 But when we had seized this woman, we asked her, ‘Who is the man?’
41 and she did not want to tell us. These things we testify.” And as they were elders of the people and judges, the synagogue believed them, and they condemned her to death. 41 but she did not tell us who he was. These things we testify.” And as they were elders and judges of the people, the whole synagogue believed them.
42 Then Susanna shouted out with a loud voice and said, “Oh everlasting God, you who know hidden things, you who know all things before their beginning, N/A
43 you know that they have testified lies against me. And look, I will die, though I have done nothing that they have maliciously intended against me!” N/A
44 And the Lord heard her voice. And look, there was an angel of the Lord as she was led out to be executed.
45 And as she was being led away to be executed, God awakened the holy spirit of a young lad whose name was Daniēl, 45 And the angel, just as he was ordered, gave a spirit of understanding to a youth, who was Daniēl.
46 and he shouted with a loud voice, “I am innocent of this woman’s blood!” N/A
47 Then all the people turned to him and said, “What is this statement that you have spoken?” N/A
48 After standing in the midst of them, he said,“Are you such fools, Oh sons of Israēl? Without examining or clearly knowing, do you condemn a daughter of Israēl? 48 Then after parted the crowd, and after standing in the midst of them, Daniēl said, “Are you such fools, Oh sons of Israēl? Without examining or clearly knowing, do you answer[4] a daughter of Israēl?
49 Return to the court, for these men have testified lies against her.” N/A
50 And all the people returned with speed. And the elders said to him, “Come, sit in our midst, and tell us, for God has regarded you as an elder.” N/A
51 And Daniēl said to them, “Separate them far from one another, and I will examine them.” And now, separate them far from one another for me so that I can test them.”
52 So when they were separated one from the one, he summoned one of them and said to him, “You have grown old in wicked days, your sins have now come, which you have committed formerly, 52 So, when they were separated, Daniēl said to the synagogue, “Now, have no regard that they are elders, saying, ‘They would never lie!’ But I will examine them according to what occurs to me.” And he summoned one of them, and they brought the elder to the youth and Daniēl to him, “Hear! Hear! You who have grown old in wicked days, your sins have now come, which you have committed formerly,
53 when you judged unjust cases, and condemning the innocent, while releasing those responsible, though the Lord says, ‘You shall not kill an innocent and righteous person.’ 53 when you were entrusted to hear and to judge cases carrying a death sentence and you condemned the innocent while you were acquitting the guilty, though the Lord says, ‘You shall not kill an innocent and righteous person.’
54 Now, therefore, if you really saw this woman, tell: Under what tree did you see them having sexual intercourse with one another?” Then he said, “Under a mastich.” 54 Now, therefore, under what tree and at what sort of place of the orchard did you see them with one another?” And the ungodly one said, “Under a mastich.”
55 Then Daniēl said, “Truly you have lied upon your own head, for already as the angel of God received the sentence from God he will split you in two.” 55 Then the youth said, “Truly you have lied upon your own soul, for today the angel of the Lord will split your soul.”
56 And after dismissing him, he ordered them to bring the other. And he said to him, “Oh seed of Chanaan and not Jouda, beauty has beguiled you, and lust has distorted your heart. 56 And after dismissing this one, he told them to bring the other to him. Then he also said to that one, “Why is your seed distorted, like that of Sidōn, and not like that of Jouda? Beauty has deceived you (or vile lust).
57 Thus you used to do to the daughters of Israēl, and they, being afraid, would have sexual intercourse with you; but a daughter of Jouda did not tolerate your lawlessness. 57 And thus you used to do to the daughters of Israēl, and they, being afraid, would have sexual intercourse with you; but a daughter of Jouda did not tolerate permitting your sickness in lawlessness.
58 Now, therefore, tell me: Under what tree did you catch them having sexual intercourse with one another?” Then, he said, “Under an oak.” 58 Now, therefore, tell me: Under what tree and in what place of the garden did you catch them having sexual intercourse with one another?” Then, he said, “Under an oak.”
59 Then Daniēl said to him, “Truly you also have lied upon your own head, for the angel of God is waiting with the sword to saw you in two so as to destroy you (both).” 59 And Daniēl said, “Sinner! Now, the angel of the Lord stands having the sword until the people destroy you (both) so that he may saw you apart.”
