Chapter 14
The Plot Against Jesus
1Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were two days away. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they might seize Him by stealth and kill Him; 2for they were saying, “Not during the feast, otherwise there will be a riot among the people.”
The Anointing at Bethany
3And while He was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as He was reclining at the table, a woman came having an alabaster jar of ointment of pure, expensive nard. After breaking the alabaster jar, she poured it over His head. 4But some were expressing indignation among themselves: “Why has this waste of the ointment occurred? 5For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor!” And they began fuming at her.
6But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing for Me. 7For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good for them; but you do not always have Me. 8She did what she could; she anointed My body beforehand for burial. 9Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”
The Betrayal by Judas
10Then Judas Iscariot, the one of the Twelve, went away to the chief priests in order to betray Him to them. 11And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him silver. And he began seeking how he might betray Him at a favorable time.
Preparation for the Passover
12And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they were sacrificing the Passover lamb, his disciples say to him, “Where do you want us to go and prepare so that you may eat the Passover?” 13And he sends two of his disciples and says to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him. 14And wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”’ 15And he himself will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready; prepare for us there.” 16And the disciples went out and came into the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
The Last Supper and the Prediction of Betrayal
17And when evening came, he arrives with the Twelve. 18And while they were reclining and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.” 19They began to be grieved and to say to him one by one, “Surely not I?” 20But he said to them, “It is one of the Twelve, the one dipping with me into the bowl. 21For the Son of Man goes just as it is written concerning him, but woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is betrayed; it would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”
22And while they were eating, taking bread and blessing it, he broke it and gave it to them and said, “Take; this is my body.” 23And taking a cup and giving thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24And he said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25Truly I say to you that I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” 26And after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
The Prediction of Peter’s Denial
|
27And Jesus says to them, “You will all fall away, because it is written:
‘I will strike the shepherd,
28But after I am raised, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
29But Peter said to him, “Even if everyone falls away, I certainly will not!”
30And Jesus says to him, “Truly I say to you that today—this very night—before the rooster crows twice, you yourself will deny me three times.”
31But he kept saying more insistently, “Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you!” And they all were saying the same thing.
and the sheep will be scattered.’ {Zech 13:7} |
Gethsemane: The Agony and the Cup
32And they come to a place named Gethsemane, and He says to His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33And He takes Peter and James and John with Him, and He began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34And He says to them, “My soul is consumed with sorrow, even to the point of death; stay here and stay alert.” 35And going forward a little, He fell upon the ground and was praying that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him. 36And He was saying, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You; take this cup away from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will.”
37And He comes and finds them sleeping, and He says to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Did you not have the strength to stay alert for one hour? 38Stay alert and pray, so that you do not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39And again He went away and prayed, saying the same thing. 40And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were weighed down; and they did not know what they should answer Him. 41And He comes the third time and says to them, “Are you sleeping and resting for the remaining time? It is enough! The hour has come; look, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42Get up, let us be going; look, the one betraying Me has drawn near.”
The Arrest in the Garden
43And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas—one of the Twelve—arrives, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44Now the one betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, “The one I kiss is the man; seize Him and lead Him away securely.” 45And coming immediately, he stepped up to Him and says, “Rabbi!” and kissed Him fervently. 46And they laid hands on Him and seized Him.
47But a certain one of those standing by, drawing his sword, struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48And answering, Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a rebel, with swords and clubs to capture Me? 49Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me; but this is so that the Scriptures may be fulfilled.” 50And they all abandoned Him and fled.
The Young Man Who Fled
51And a certain young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen cloth over his naked body; and they catch him. 52But he, leaving the linen cloth behind, fled naked.
The Trial Before the Sanhedrin
53And they led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes come together. 54And Peter followed Him from a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting together with the attendants and warming himself by the light of the fire. 55Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking testimony against Jesus in order to put Him to death, and they were finding none. 56For many were giving false testimony against Him, and their testimonies were not consistent. 57And some, standing up, were giving false testimony against Him, saying, 58"We ourselves heard Him saying, ‘I will destroy this temple made with hands and through three days I will build another not made with hands.’” 59And even so, their testimony was not consistent.
|
60And the high priest, standing up in the center, questioned Jesus, saying, “Have You no answer? What is this that these men are testifying against You?”
61But He remained silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest was questioning Him and says to Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”
62And Jesus said, “I am;
and you will see the Son of Man
sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of the sky.” {Psalm 109 (110):1} |
63And the high priest, tearing his tunics, says, “What further need do we have of witnesses? 64You heard the blasphemy! How does it appear to you?” And they all condemned Him to be worthy of death. 65And some began to spit on Him and to blindfold His face and to strike Him with their fists and to say to Him, “Prophesy!” And the attendants received Him with slaps.
Peter’s Denial
66And while Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest comes, 67and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked intently at him and says, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” 68But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are talking about.” And he went out into the gateway [and a rooster crowed]. 69And the servant girl, seeing him, began again to say to those standing by, “This man is one of them.” 70But again he was denying it. And after a little while, again those standing by were saying to Peter, “Truly you are one of them, for you are also a Galilean.” 71But he began to invoke curses and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak!” 72And immediately, for the second time, a rooster crowed. And Peter remembered the word, how Jesus had said to him, “Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And breaking down, he was weeping.
