Chapter 13
The Destruction of the Temple Foretold
1And as He was going out of the temple, one of His disciples says to Him, “Teacher, look! What massive stones and what massive buildings!” 2And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone here will be left upon another that will not be torn down.”
Signs of the Beginning of Birth Pains
3And while He was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew were questioning Him privately, 4"Tell us, when will these things be, and what is the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?” 5And Jesus began to say to them, “See to it that no one misleads you. 6Many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and they will mislead many. 7And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; it must happen, but the end is not yet. 8For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These things are the beginning of birth pains.
9But you, look out for yourselves. They will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them. 10And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. 11And whenever they lead you away to deliver you up, do not worry beforehand what you are to say, but whatever is given to you in that hour, speak this; for it is not you who are speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 12And brother will deliver over brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. 13And you will be hated by everyone because of My name. But the one who endures to the end—this one will be saved.”
The Abomination of Desolation
14"But when you see the ‘abomination of desolation’ standing where it must not be (let the reader understand), then those in Judea must flee to the mountains. 15The one on the housetop must not go down, nor enter in to take anything out of his house. 16And the one in the field must not turn back to pick up his cloak. 17And woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days! 18Pray that it may not happen in winter.
19For those days will be a time of tribulation such as has not occurred from the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will be again. 20And if the Lord had not cut short those days, no flesh would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom He chose, He cut short the days. 21And then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘Look, there!’ do not believe it. 22For false christs and false prophets will arise and will perform signs and wonders in order to mislead, if possible, the elect. 23But you, be on guard; I have told you everything in advance.”

The Lesson of the Fig Tree
28"Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29In the same way, you also, when you see these things happening, know that He is near—right at the doors. 30Truly I say to you that this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things take place. 31Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will certainly not pass away.”
The Call to Watchfulness
32"But concerning that day or the hour, no one knows—neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, except the Father. 33Watch out! Stay awake! For you do not know when the appointed time is. 34It is like a man going on a journey, who, having left his house and given authority to his slaves—to each one his work—also commanded the doorkeeper to stay alert.
35Therefore, stay alert! For you do not know when the master of the house is coming—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning—36 lest he come suddenly and find you sleeping. 37And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Stay alert!”
