Chapter 15
Jesus Before Pilate
1And immediately, early in the morning, the chief priests, having reached a decision with the elders and the scribes and the whole Sanhedrin, bound Jesus, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate. 2And Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And answering him, He says, “You say so.” 3And the chief priests began accusing Him of many things. 4Then Pilate questioned Him again, saying, “Have You no answer? See how many charges they are bringing against You!” 5But Jesus no longer answered anything, so that Pilate was astonished.
Barabbas and the Sentence of Death
6Now at every feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they requested. 7And the man called Barabbas was imprisoned among the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. 8And the crowd, having come up, began to ask Pilate to do just as he usually did for them. 9Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.
11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he should release Barabbas for them instead. 12And Pilate, answering again, was saying to them, “What then should I do with the one you call the King of the Jews?” 13And they cried out again, “Crucify Him!” 14But Pilate was saying to them, “Why? What evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!” 15So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus
16And the soldiers led Him away inside the palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they call together the whole cohort. 17And they dress Him in purple and, after weaving a crown of thorns, they place it on Him. 18And they began to salute Him: “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19and they kept striking His head with a staff and spitting on Him; and kneeling down, they were doing homage to Him. 20And when they had mocked Him, they stripped the purple off Him and put His own clothes on Him. And they lead Him out so that they might crucify Him.
The Road to Golgotha
21And they press into service a certain passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country—the father of Alexander and Rufus—to carry His cross.
The Crucifixion
{Isa. 53:12}]]
|
22And they bring Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, “Place of a Skull.”
23And they tried to give Him wine flavored with myrrh, but He did not take it.
24And they crucify Him.
And they divide His garments,
25Now it was the third hour when they crucified Him.
26And the inscription of the charge against Him was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS.
27And with Him they crucify two rebels, one on His right and one on His left. [[28 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was counted with the lawless.”]]
casting lots for them to see who would take what. {Ps. 22:18} |
29And those passing by were blaspheming Him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30save Yourself by coming down from the cross!” 31Likewise also the chief priests, mocking Him among themselves along with the scribes, were saying, “He saved others; He cannot save Himself! 32Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” Even those who were crucified with Him were insulting Him.
The Death of Jesus
33 Καὶ γενομένης ὥρας ἕκτης σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφ' ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης. 34 καὶ τῇ ἐνάτῃ ὥρᾳ ἐβόησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ, Ἐλωΐ ἐλωΐ λαμὰ σαβαχθανι; ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον, Ὁ θεός μου ὁ θεός μου, εἰς τί ἐγκατέλιπές με; {Psalm 21 (22):1 (LXX)}
33And when the sixth hour had come, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, for what purpose have You forsaken Me?” {Psalm 21 (22):1 (LXX)}
35And some of those standing by, when they heard it, were saying, “Look, He is calling Elijah.” 36And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a staff, and gave Him a drink, saying, “Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.” 37But Jesus, letting out a loud cry, breathed His last. 38And the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39And when the centurion, who was standing there facing Him, saw that He breathed His last in this way, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
40There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome, 41who used to follow Him and minister to Him when He was in Galilee, and many other women who had come up with Him to Jerusalem.
The Burial of Jesus
42And when evening had already come, since it was the Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath), 43Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God, gathered his courage and went in to Pilate and requested the body of Jesus. 44But Pilate was surprised that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He had been dead for long. 45And once he confirmed it from the centurion, he granted the corpse to Joseph.
46And after Joseph bought a linen cloth and took Him down, he wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47Now Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching where He was laid.
