Then Judas, the one who betrayed Him, seeing that He had been condemned, was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders,
saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? That is your concern.”
And flinging the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, he withdrew; and going away, he hanged himself.

But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood.”
And having taken counsel, they bought with them the Potter’s Field as a burial place for strangers.
Therefore, that field has been called the “Field of Blood” until this very day.
Then was fulfilled what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying: “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one on whom a price had been set, whom they of the sons of Israel had priced;
and they gave them for the Potter’s Field, just as the Lord directed me.”

Now at the feast, the governor was accustomed to release one prisoner to the crowd, whomever they wanted.
And they had at that time a notorious prisoner called [Jesus] Barabbas.
So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: [Jesus] Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”
For he knew that they had handed Him over because of envy.
And while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man; for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.”

But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus destroyed.
And the governor answered and said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas!”
Pilate said to them, “Then what should I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let Him be crucified!”
But he said, ”Why? What evil has He done?” But they cried out all the more, saying, ”Let Him be crucified!”

When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this blood; you see to it.”
And all the people answered and said, “His blood be on us and on our children!”
Then he released Barabbas to them; but having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole cohort around Him.
And after stripping Him, they put a scarlet military cloak around Him,
and after weaving a crown of thorns, they placed it on His head and put a reed in His right hand; and kneeling before Him, they mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
And they spit on Him, and took the reed and kept striking Him on the head.
And when they had finished mocking Him, they stripped Him of the cloak and put His own clothes back on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.

And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which is called Place of a Skull),
they gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall; but after tasting it, He did not want to drink.
And after they had crucified Him, they divided His clothes among themselves by casting lots.
And sitting down, they kept watch over Him there.
And they placed above His head the charge against Him in writing: “THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
At that time, two rebels were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left.

And those passing by kept blaspheming Him, shaking their heads
and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”
In the same way the chief priests, along with the scribes and elders, mocked Him, saying,
"He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel! Let Him come down now from the cross and we will believe in Him.
He trusts in God; let God rescue Him now if He wants Him, for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”
And even the rebels who were crucified with Him were insulting Him in the same way.

Now from the sixth hour, darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour.
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?”—that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
{Psalm 21 (22):1 (LXX)}
When some of those standing there heard it, they began saying, “This man is calling for Elijah.”
And immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave him a drink.
But the rest were saying, “Leave him alone; let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
Then Jesus, having cried out again with a loud voice, yielded up his spirit.

And look—the curtain of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earth was shaken and the rocks were split.
The tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;
and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many.
Now when the centurion and those with him who were keeping watch over Jesus saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, they were terrified, saying, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”

On the next day—which is the day after the Preparation—the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate
and said, “Sir, we remember that while that deceiver was still alive he said, ‘After three days I will rise.’
Therefore, order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, so that his disciples don’t come and steal him and tell the people, ‘He has been raised from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.”
Pilate said to them, “You have a guard. Go, make it as secure as you know how.”
So they went and secured the tomb, sealing the stone and posting the guard.
