Chapter 11
The Desolation of the Forest
| 11:1 Open your doors, O Lebanon, and let fire devour your cedars! 2 Let the pine tree wail, because the cedar has fallen, because the great ones (megistanes) have been greatly distressed. Wail, O oaks of Bashan, because the thicket that was planted together (ho drymos ho symphytos) has been pulled down. |
| 3 A voice of shepherds mourning, because their majesty has been distressed; a voice of roaring lions, because the pride (phryagma) of the Jordan has been distressed. |
The Flock Doomed to Slaughter
| 4 Thus says the Lord Almighty: "Shepherd the sheep of the slaughter, 5 which those who possessed them were slaughtering and did not repent; and those who sold them were saying, 'Blessed be the Lord, for we have become rich!' and their own shepherds felt nothing for them. 6 Therefore I will no longer spare those who inhabit the land," says the Lord. "And behold, I am delivering the people, each into the hands of his neighbor and into the hands of his king; and they shall cut up the land, and I will not rescue from their hand." |
The Two Staffs: Favor and Union
| 7 And I will shepherd the sheep of the slaughter in the land of Canaan (eis tēn Chanaanitin). And I took for myself two staffs: the one I called Beauty (Kallos) and the other I called Measurement (Schoinisma)—and I shepherded the sheep. 8 And I removed the three shepherds in one month; and my soul will be burdened against them, for indeed their souls were howling against me. 9 And I said, "I will not shepherd you. Let the dying one die, and the failing one fail; and let the remnants devour each the flesh of his neighbor." |
| 10 And I took my staff, Beauty, and I cast it away to scatter my covenant, which I made with all the peoples. 11 And it was scattered in that day; and the Canaanites, the sheep that were being kept, knew that it was the word of the Lord. |
The Thirty Pieces of Silver
| 12 And I will say to them, "If it is good in your sight, give me my wage or refuse it." And they weighed out my wage: thirty pieces of silver. 13 And the Lord said to me, "Drop them into the furnace (chōneutērion), and see if it is proven (dokimon), in the way that I was proven for their sake." And I took the thirty pieces of silver and I threw them into the house of the Lord, into the furnace. |
| 14 Then I cast away the second staff, Measurement, to scatter the possession (kataschesin) between Judah and between Israel. |
The Foolish Shepherd
| 15 And the Lord said to me, "Take again for yourself the shepherd’s gear of an unskilled shepherd (poimenos apeirou). 16 For behold, I am raising up a shepherd over the land; he will not visit the one who is failing, nor will he seek the one who is scattered, nor will he heal the one who is crushed, nor will he guide the one who is whole; but he will devour the flesh of the choice ones and twist out their ankle-bones (astragalous). |
| 17 O, you who shepherd vanities and who have abandoned the sheep! A sword upon his arms and upon his right eye! His arm shall be completely withered, and his right eye shall be completely blinded." |
