Chapter 2
The Day of Pentecost
The Coming of the Spirit
1And when the day of Pentecost had finally arrived, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly, a sound came out of heaven like the rushing of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3And tongues appearing like fire were seen by them, distributing themselves and resting upon each one of them. 4And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out boldly.
The Gathering of the Nations
5  Ἦσαν δὲ ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ κατοικοῦντες Ἰουδαῖοι, ἄνδρες εὐλαβεῖς ἀπὸ παντὸς ἔθνους τῶν ὑπὸ τὸν οὐρανόν. 6  γενομένης δὲ τῆς φωνῆς ταύτης συνῆλθεν τὸ πλῆθος καὶ συνεχύθη, ὅτι ἤκουον εἷς ἕκαστος τῇ ἰδίᾳ διαλέκτῳ λαλούντων αὐτῶν. 7  ἐξίσταντο δὲ καὶ ἐθαύμαζον λέγοντες, Οὐχ ἰδοὺ ἅπαντες οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ λαλοῦντες Γαλιλαῖοι; 8  καὶ πῶς ἡμεῖς ἀκούομεν ἕκαστος τῇ ἰδίᾳ διαλέκτῳ ἡμῶν ἐν ᾗ ἐγεννήθημεν;
5Now there were Jews residing in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6When this sound occurred, the crowd gathered and was thrown into confusion, because each one was hearing them speaking in his own language. 7They were astounded and amazed, saying, “Look, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8So how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language?
9Parthians, Medes, and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the regions of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11(both Jews and proselytes), Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the great things of God!” 12And they were all astounded and deeply perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13But others, mocking, were saying, “They are full of sweet new wine!”
Peter’s Sermon
Peter Explains the Pentecost Phenomenon
14But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16On the contrary, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
  17‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says,
‘I will pour out from my Spirit upon all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams;
18and even upon my male servants and upon my female servants
in those days I will pour out from my Spirit,
and they shall prophesy.
19And I will grant wonders in the heaven above
and signs on the earth below,
blood and fire and a vapor of smoke;
20the sun shall be turned into darkness
and the moon into blood,
before the great and glorious Day of the Lord comes. 21And it shall be that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
’ {Joel 2:28-32}
The Proclamation of the Risen Christ
22"Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst—just as you yourselves know— 23this man, delivered up by the predetermined counsel and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of lawless men and put to death. 24But God raised Him up, releasing Him from the birth-pangs of death, because it was not possible for Him to be held by it.
25 For David says concerning Him:
  ‘I saw the Lord before me continually,
for He is at my right hand so that I may not be shaken.
26Therefore my heart was cheered and my tongue rejoiced;
furthermore, my flesh also will dwell in hope,
27because You will not abandon my soul to Hades,
nor will You allow Your Holy One to see decay.
28You have made known to me the paths of life;
You will fill me with gladness in Your presence.’
{Ps. 16:8-11}
The Evidence of the Resurrection and Exaltation
29"Brothers, I may say to you with boldness regarding the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is among us to this day. 30Therefore, being a prophet and knowing that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of the fruit of his loins upon his throne, {Ps. 132:11; 2 Sam 7:12-13} 31he looked ahead and spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that:
  ‘He was neither abandoned to Hades,
nor did His flesh see decay.
’ {Ps. 16:10}
32This Jesus God raised up, of which we all are witnesses. 33Therefore, having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured out this which you both see and hear. 34For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says:
  ‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
35until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.
”’ {Ps. 110:1}
36Therefore let the whole house of Israel know with certainty that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”
The People’s Response
37Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” 38Peter said to them, “Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39For the promise is for you, and for your children, and for all those far away—as many as the Lord our God may call to Himself.” 40And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept exhorting them, saying, “Be saved from this crooked generation!” 41So those who welcomed his message were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. 42And they were continually devoting themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers.
Life in the Early Christian Community
43A sense of awe came over every soul, and many wonders and signs were happening through the apostles. 44Now all who believed were together and held all things in common; 45they began selling their property and possessions and distributing the proceeds to everyone, according to whatever need anyone had. 46Day by day, continuing with one mind in the temple courts and breaking bread from house to house, they shared their food with gladness and sincerity of heart, 47praising God and having favor with all the people. And every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
