Chapter 3
The Encounter at the Beautiful Gate
1Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer—the ninth hour. 2And a certain man, who had been lame from his mother’s womb, was being carried along; they would place him every day at the temple gate called “Beautiful” so he could ask for alms from those entering the temple. 3When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he began asking to receive an alms-gift. 4But Peter, along with John, gazed intently at him and said, “Look at us!” 5So he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them.
A Greater Gift
6But Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not possess, but what I do have, this I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, walk!” 7And seizing him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were made strong. 8Leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and he entered the temple with them—walking and leaping and praising God.
9And all the people saw him walking and praising God. 10And they recognized him as the one who used to sit for alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, and they were filled with awe and astonishment at what had happened to him.
Peter’s Second Sermon
Peter’s Address in Solomon’s Portico
11While the man was clinging to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at the portico called Solomon’s, utterly astounded. 12When Peter saw this, he addressed the people: “Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us as though by our own power or piety we had made him walk? 13The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—the God of our fathers {Ex. 3:6,15} has glorified His Servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and disowned in the presence of Pilate, even after he had decided to release Him. 14But you disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15and you killed the Author of Life, whom God raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses. 16And by faith in His name, His name itself has strengthened this man whom you see and know; yes, the faith that comes through Him has given this man this complete wholeness in the presence of you all.”
A Call to Repentance and Restoration
17"And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, just as your rulers did. 18But in this way God has fulfilled what He announced beforehand through the mouth of all the prophets—that His Christ would suffer. 19Repent, therefore, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away, 20so that seasons of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that He may send the Christ appointed for you—Jesus. 21It is necessary for heaven to receive Him until the times of the restoration of all things, of which God spoke through the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient times.”
The Testimony of Moses and the Prophets
{Deut. {Deut.
22"Moses indeed said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers; you shall listen to Him in everything He says to you. {Deut. 18:15-16} 23And it shall be that every soul that does not listen to that prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.’ {Deut. 18:19} 24And all the prophets, from Samuel and those who followed, as many as have spoken, also announced these days. 25You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God ratified with your fathers, saying to Abraham, 'And in your offspring all the families of the earth will be blessed.’ {Gen. 22:18; 16:4} 26God, having raised up His Servant, sent Him to you first, to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.”
