And he went out from there and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.
And when the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue; and many who heard were astounded, saying, “Where did this man get these things?” and “What is this wisdom given to him?” and “How are such miracles happening through his hands?”
"Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.

And King Herod heard about it—for the name of Jesus had become well-known—and people were saying, “John the Baptizer has been raised from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.”
But others were saying, “He is Elijah,” and still others, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.”
But when Herod heard, he kept saying, “The one I beheaded, John—this man has been raised!”

For Herod himself had sent out and seized John and bound him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her.
For John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”
And Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to kill him, but she was not able to;
for Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, yet he would listen to him gladly.

Then a strategic day came when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his high officials, the military commanders, and the leading men of Galilee.
And when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”
And he swore to her many things: “Whatever you ask me I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.”
And she went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptizer.”
And coming in immediately with haste to the king, she made her request, saying, “I want you to give me at once, on a platter, the head of John the Baptist.”

And many people saw them going and recognized them; and they ran together there on foot from all the cities and arrived ahead of them.
And as He stepped out, He saw a vast crowd and was moved with deep compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things.
And when it was already a late hour, His disciples approached Him and were saying, “This place is a wilderness and the hour is already late;
dismiss them so that they may go away into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”
But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they say to Him, “Should we go away and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?”
But He says to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they found out, they say, “Five, and two fish.”

And immediately He compelled His disciples to get into the boat and to go ahead to the other side toward Bethsaida, while He Himself dismissed the crowd.
And after He had said goodbye to them, He went up onto the mountain to pray.
When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land.
And seeing them straining at the oars—for the wind was against them—at about the fourth watch of the night, He comes toward them walking on the sea, and He intended to pass them by.
