And the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered toward Him.
And they saw that some of His disciples were eating their bread with “common” hands—that is, unwashed.
(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands with a fist, holding fast to the tradition of the elders;
and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they sprinkle themselves; and there are many other things which they received to hold fast to: the washings of cups, and pitchers, and copper kettles, and dining couches.)
And the Pharisees and the scribes questioned Him: “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but instead eat their bread with common hands?”

Having let go of the commandment of God, you hold fast to the tradition of men.”
And He was saying to them, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commandment of God so that you may keep your own tradition!
For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’
{Exodus 20:12}
and, ‘The one who speaks evil of father or mother must surely die.’
{Exodus 21:17}
But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or mother: Whatever help you might have received from me is Corban (that is, a gift dedicated to God),’
you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother.
Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition which you handed down. And you do many such similar things.”

What Truly Defiles

And He was saying, “That which proceeds out of the person—that is what defiles the person.
For from within, out of the heart of people, evil designs proceed: sexual immoralities, thefts, murders,
adulteries, greeds, wickednesses, deceit, licentiousness, an ‘evil eye’ (envy), slander, pride, folly.
All these evil things proceed from within and defile the person.”

And having risen up from there, He went away into the regions of Tyre. And having entered a house, He wanted no one to know it, yet He was not able to escape notice.
Instead, immediately, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard about Him, and she came and fell at His feet.
Now the woman was a Greek, Syrophoenician by race, and she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

And He was saying to her, “Let the children first be satisfied, for it is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.”
But she answered and says to Him, “Lord, even the little dogs under the table eat from the children’s crumbs.”
And He said to her, “Because of this word, go; the demon has gone out of your daughter.”
And having gone away to her home, she found the child lying on the bed and the demon gone.

And again, having gone out from the regions of Tyre, He came through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, through the midst of the regions of the Decapolis.
And they bring to Him a man who was deaf and spoke with difficulty, and they beg Him to lay His hand on him.
And having taken him aside from the crowd privately, He put His fingers into his ears, and after spitting, He touched his tongue.
And looking up into heaven, He sighed deeply and says to him, “Ephphatha,” which is, “Be opened!”
