Chapter 5
The Gerasene Demoniac
1And they came to the other side of the sea, into the region of the Gerasenes. 2And immediately as He stepped out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit met Him from out of the tombs. 3This man had his dwelling among the tombs, and no one was able to bind him anymore, not even with a chain. 4For he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles smashed to pieces; and no one was strong enough to subdue him. 5And throughout every night and day, among the tombs and in the mountains, he was crying out and cutting himself with stones.
6And seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees before Him. 7And shouting with a loud voice, he says, “What do we have to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure You by God, do not torment me!” 8For He had been saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9And He was asking him, “What is your name?” And he says to Him, “My name is Legion, for we are many.” 10And he kept begging Him earnestly not to send them out of the region.
The Destruction of the Swine
11Now a great herd of pigs was there, feeding near the mountain. 12And they begged Him, saying, “Send us into the pigs so that we may enter them.” 13And He permitted them. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs, and the herd—about two thousand—rushed down the steep bank into the sea and were drowned in the sea. 14And those tending them fled and reported it in the city and in the countryside; and the people came to see what it was that had happened.
15And they come to Jesus and observe the demoniac—the one who had the “Legion”—sitting there, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16And those who had seen it described to them how it happened to the demoniac and about the pigs. 17And they began to beg Him to depart from their borders.
The Commission of the Restored Man
18And as He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed began begging Him that he might be with Him. 19And He did not allow him, but says to him, “Go to your home, to your own people, and report to them all that the Lord has done for you and how He had mercy on you.” 20And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him, and everyone was amazed.
The Plea of Jairus
21And when Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered around Him, and He was beside the sea. 22And one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, comes; and seeing Him, he falls at His feet 23and begs Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death; come and lay Your hands on her so that she may be saved and live.” 24And He went with him.
The Woman with the Flow of Blood
And a great crowd was following Him and they were pressing in on Him. 25Now there was a woman who had been in a flow of blood for twelve years 26and had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent everything she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse. 27Having heard about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His garment. 28For she was saying, “If I touch even His garments, I will be saved.” 29And immediately the spring of her blood was dried up, and she knew in her body that she was healed from the scourge.
30And immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that power had gone out from Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My garments?” 31And His disciples were saying to Him, “You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’” 32And He was looking around to see the woman who had done this. 33But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace and be whole from your scourge.”
Raising the Daughter of Jairus
35While He was still speaking, people come from the synagogue leader’s house saying, “Your daughter has died; why still bother the Teacher?” 36But Jesus, overhearing the word being spoken, says to the synagogue leader, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” 37And He allowed no one to follow along with Him except Peter and James and John the brother of James.
38And they come to the house of the synagogue leader, and He observes a commotion, and people weeping and wailing loudly. 39And having entered, He says to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child has not died but is sleeping.” 40And they began laughing at Him. But He, having put them all out, takes the father of the child and the mother and those with Him, and goes in where the child was. 41And grasping the hand of the child, He says to her, “Talitha koum,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!” 42And immediately the little girl stood up and began to walk—for she was twelve years old. And they were immediately overcome with great amazement. 43And He strictly ordered them many times that no one should know this, and He said that something should be given to her to eat.
