Chapter 20
Departure from Ephesus and the Journey Through Greece
1After the uproar had ceased, Paul sent for the disciples; and after encouraging them and saying his farewells, he departed to go into Macedonia. 2When he had traveled through those regions and had given them much encouragement with many words, he came to Greece. 3There he stayed for three months. Just as he was about to set sail for Syria, a plot was hatched against him by the Jews, so he decided to return through Macedonia.
4He was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea; Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica; Gaius from Derbe; Timothy; and Tychicus and Trophimus from the province of Asia. 5These men went on ahead and were waiting for us at Troas. 6But we sailed from Philippi after the Days of Unleavened Bread, and in five days we reached them at Troas, where we stayed for seven days.
Eutychus and the Midnight Meeting at Troas
7On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul began talking with them, since he intended to leave the next day; and he prolonged his speech until midnight. 8Now there were many lamps in the upstairs room where we were gathered. 9And a certain young man named Eutychus, who was sitting in the window, was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul kept on talking for a long time. Overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was picked up dead.
10But Paul went down, threw himself upon him, and embracing him, said, “Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.” 11Then Paul went back up, broke the bread and ate, and after conversing with them for a long time until daybreak, he finally departed. 12And they took the boy away alive and were encouraged beyond measure.
The Coastal Voyage to Miletus
13But we, going ahead to the ship, set sail for Assos, intending to take Paul aboard there; for he had arranged it this way, intending to go on foot himself. 14When he met us at Assos, we took him aboard and went to Mitylene. 15Sailing from there, on the following day we arrived opposite Chios; the next day we crossed over to Samos, and on the day after that we came to Miletus. 16For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus so that he might not have to spend time in the province of Asia; for he was hurrying, if it were possible for him, to be in Jerusalem for the day of Pentecost.
Paul’s Farewell Address: The Pattern of His Ministry
17Now from Miletus, he sent word to Ephesus and summoned the elders of the church. 18When they arrived, he said to them: “You yourselves know how I lived among you the entire time, from the first day I set foot in the province of Asia, 19serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and through the trials that came upon me by the plots of the Jews. 20You know that I did not shrink back from declaring to you anything that was profitable, teaching you both publicly and from house to house, 21solemnly testifying to both Jews and Greeks regarding repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus.
Bound by the Spirit to Jerusalem
22And now, look—bound in my spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, 23except that in city after city the Holy Spirit solemnly warns me, saying that imprisonment and afflictions await me. 24But I consider my life of no account, as if it were precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus: to testify solemnly to the gospel of the grace of God.”
The Charge to the Overseers
25 “And now, look—I know that all of you, among whom I went about proclaiming the kingdom, will never see my face again. 26Therefore, I testify to you this very day that I am innocent of the blood of all; 27for I did not shrink back from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. 28Keep watch over yourselves and over all the flock in which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as overseers, to shepherd the church of God, which he obtained through his own blood.
29I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; 30and from among your own selves men will rise up, speaking distorted things to draw away the disciples after them. 31Therefore, be alert! Remember that for three years, night and day, I never stopped warning each one of you with tears.
Commendation and Final Admonition
32And now, I entrust you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 33I have coveted no one’s silver or gold or clothing. 34You yourselves know that these hands of mine served my own needs and those who were with me. 35In everything I showed you that by laboring in this way, we must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, for he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
A Tearful Farewell at the Shore
36When he had said these things, he knelt down with them all and prayed. 37And there was loud weeping by everyone as they embraced Paul and kissed him fervently, 38grieving most of all over the word he had spoken—that they were never going to see his face again. Then they escorted him to the ship.
