Now there was a certain man in Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Cohort.
He was a devout man and one who feared God with his entire household; he gave many charitable gifts to the Jewish people and prayed to God continually.
About the ninth hour of the day, he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God entering and saying to him, “Cornelius!”
Gazing intently at him and becoming terrified, he said, “What is it, Lord?” And the angel said to him, “Your prayers and your charitable gifts have ascended as a memorial offering before God.
And now, send men to Joppa and summon a certain Simon who is called Peter.
He is staying as a guest with another Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.”
When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those who continually attended him,
and after explaining everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.

On the next day, as they were traveling and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray about the sixth hour.
But he became very hungry and wanted to eat; and while they were preparing the meal, a trance fell upon him.
He saw the sky opened up and an object like a large linen sheet coming down, being lowered by its four corners to the earth.
In it were all kinds of four-footed animals and crawling things of the earth and birds of the air.
Then a voice came to him: “Get up, Peter; kill and eat!”

But Peter said, “By no means, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.”
And the voice spoke to him again, a second time: “What God has cleansed, you must not call common.”
This happened three times, and immediately the object was taken up into heaven.

While Peter was utterly perplexed within himself as to what the vision he had seen might mean, behold, the men sent by Cornelius, having asked their way to Simon’s house, stood at the gateway.
They called out and inquired whether Simon, called Peter, was staying there as a guest.
As Peter was deeply pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Look, three men are looking for you.
Get up, go down, and accompany them without misgivings, because I myself have sent them.”

So Peter went down to the men and said, “Look, I am the one you are looking for. What is the reason for your visit?”
They said, “Cornelius, a centurion—a righteous and God-fearing man, well-spoken of by the entire nation of the Jews—was divinely directed by a holy angel to summon you to his house and to hear words from you.”

So he invited them in and gave them lodging. On the next day, he got up and went with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.
On the following day, they entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was expecting them, having called together his relatives and close friends.
As Peter was entering, Cornelius met him, fell at his feet, and worshiped him.
But Peter raised him up, saying, “Stand up; I myself am also a man.”
And talking with him, he went in and found many people gathered together.

And Cornelius said, “Four days ago, reaching to this very hour, I was praying the ninth hour prayer in my house; and behold, a man stood before me in shining clothing
and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your charitable gifts have been remembered before God.
Send, therefore, to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter; he is staying as a guest in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea.’
So I sent for you immediately, and you have done a kind thing by coming. Now, then, we are all present here before God to hear everything that has been commanded to you by the Lord.”

Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “I truly understand now that God is not one who shows favoritism,
but in every nation, the one who fears Him and does what is right is acceptable to Him.
You know the message He sent to the sons of Israel, proclaiming the good news of peace through Jesus Christ—He is Lord of all.
You know the thing that happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed:
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were being oppressed by the devil, because God was with Him.

We are witnesses of all that He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put Him to death by hanging Him on a tree,
but God raised Him on the third day and allowed Him to be clearly seen—
not by all the people, but by witnesses previously chosen by God, namely us, who ate and drank with Him after He rose from the dead.
And He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify solemnly that this is the One appointed by God as Judge of the living and the dead.
To Him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name.”
