Chapter 9
The Road to Damascus
1  Ὁ δὲ Σαῦλος ἔτι ἐμπνέων ἀπειλῆς καὶ φόνου εἰς τοὺς μαθητὰς τοῦ κυρίου, προσελθὼν τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ 2  ᾐτήσατο παρ' αὐτοῦ ἐπιστολὰς εἰς Δαμασκὸν πρὸς τὰς συναγωγάς, ὅπως ἐάν τινας εὕρῃ τῆς ὁδοῦ ὄντας, ἄνδρας τε καὶ γυναῖκας, δεδεμένους ἀγάγῃ εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ. 3  ἐν δὲ τῷ πορεύεσθαι ἐγένετο αὐτὸν ἐγγίζειν τῇ Δαμασκῷ, ἐξαίφνης τε αὐτὸν περιήστραψεν φῶς ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ 4  καὶ πεσὼν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἤκουσεν φωνὴν λέγουσαν αὐτῷ, Σαοὺλ Σαούλ, τί με διώκεις;
1Now Saul, still breathing out threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2and requested letters from him to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. 3As he was traveling, it happened that he was approaching Damascus, when suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”
5And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And He replied, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 6But get up and enter the city, and it will be told to you what you must do.” 7The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the sound but seeing no one. 8Saul got up from the ground, but though his eyes were open, he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. 9And for three days he was without sight, and he neither ate nor drank.
The Commission of Ananias
10Now there was a certain disciple in Damascus named Ananias; and the Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” 11And the Lord said to him, “Get up and go to the street called ‘Straight,’ and at the house of Judas, look for a man from Tarsus named Saul; for behold, he is praying. 12And he has seen a man named Ananias come in and lay hands on him so that he might regain his sight.”
13But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints in Jerusalem. 14And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call upon your name.” 15But the Lord said to him, “Go, for this man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel. 16For I myself will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.”
17So Ananias went and entered the house; and after laying his hands on him, he said, “Saul, brother, the Lord has sent me—Jesus, the one who appeared to you on the road as you were coming—so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18And immediately, something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight; then he got up and was baptized.
Saul Preaches in Damascus
19And after taking food, he was strengthened. Now he stayed for several days with the disciples in Damascus, 20and immediately in the synagogues he began proclaiming Jesus, that “This man is the Son of God.” 21But everyone who heard him was astonished and began saying, “Is this not the man who in Jerusalem ravaged those who call upon this name? And had he not come here for this very purpose—to bring them bound before the chief priests?” 22But Saul was being empowered all the more, and he continued to baffle the Jews living in Damascus by proving that this man is the Christ.
The Escape from Damascus
23When many days had passed, the Jews conspired together to do away with him; 24but their plot became known to Saul. They were even watching the gates day and night so that they might kill him. 25But his disciples took him by night and let him down through the wall, lowering him in a large basket.
Saul in Jerusalem
26When he arrived in Jerusalem, he kept trying to associate with the disciples, but everyone was afraid of him, not believing that he was truly a disciple. 27But Barnabas took hold of him and brought him to the apostles, and he described to them how Saul had seen the Lord on the road and that He had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken boldly in the name of Jesus. 28So he was with them, moving about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord. 29He was speaking and debating against the Hellenists, but they were attempting to do away with him. 30When the brothers found out, they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus.
31So then, the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace, being built up; and going on in the fear of the Lord and in the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it continued to multiply.
Peter’s Ministry
The Healing of Aeneas at Lydda
32Now it happened that as Peter was traveling through all those regions, he also came down to the saints living in Lydda. 33There he found a man named Aeneas, who was paralyzed and had been bedridden for eight years. 34Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and make your own bed.” And immediately he stood up. 35And all those who lived in Lydda and the Plain of Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord.
The Raising of Tabitha in Joppa
36Now in Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha (which translated is called Dorcas). She was overflowing with good works and acts of charity which she continually did. 37In those days she became ill and died; after they had washed her body, they placed her in an upstairs room. 38Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, hearing that Peter was there, sent two men to him, urging him, “Please do not delay in coming to us.”
39So Peter got up and went with them. When he arrived, they took him to the upstairs room. All the widows stood beside him weeping, showing him the tunics and cloaks that Dorcas used to make while she was with them. 40But Peter sent them all outside, knelt down, and prayed. Then turning to the body, he said, “Tabitha, arise.” She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. 41Giving her his hand, he helped her up. Then calling the saints and the widows, he presented her to them alive. 42This became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. 43And it happened that he stayed in Joppa for many days with a certain Simon, a tanner.
