Chapter 21
The Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem
1And when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied up and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me. 3And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,' and he will send them at once.” 4Now this happened so that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying:
5"Say to the Daughter of Zion,
{Isa. 62:11} 'Behold, your King is coming to you,
Humble, and mounted on a donkey,
Even on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’”
{Zech. 9:9}
6The disciples went and did just as Jesus had directed them. 7They brought the donkey and the colt and laid their cloaks on them, and He sat upon them. 8Most of the crowd spread their own cloaks on the road, while others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them on the road. 9And the crowds—those going in front of Him and those following behind—were shouting out, saying:
“Hosanna to the Son of David!
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna
in the highest!” {Psalm 117 (118):25-26}
10And when He entered Jerusalem, the whole city was shaken, saying, “Who is this?” 11And the crowds kept saying, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
Cleansing the Temple
12And Jesus entered the Temple and drove out all those who were selling and buying in the Temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those selling doves. 13And he said to them, “It is written:
'My house shall be called a house of prayer,' {Isa. 56:7}
but you are making it a ‘cave of bandits'!”
14And the blind and the lame approached him in the Temple, and he healed them. 15But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonders that he did, and the children who were shouting in the Temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!”, they were indignant. 16And they said to him, “Do you hear what these ones are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes. Have you never read: ‘Out of the mouths of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise'?” {Psalm 8:3} 17And leaving them behind, he went out of the city to Bethany and spent the night there.
The Cursing of the Fig Tree
18  Πρωῒ δὲ ἐπανάγων εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἐπείνασεν. 19  καὶ ἰδὼν συκῆν μίαν ἐπὶ τῆς ὁδοῦ ἦλθεν ἐπ' αὐτὴν καὶ οὐδὲν εὗρεν ἐν αὐτῇ εἰ μὴ φύλλα μόνον, καὶ λέγει αὐτῇ, Μηκέτι ἐκ σοῦ καρπὸς γένηται εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. καὶ ἐξηράνθη παραχρῆμα ἡ συκῆ. 20  καὶ ἰδόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ ἐθαύμασαν λέγοντες, Πῶς παραχρῆμα ἐξηράνθη ἡ συκῆ;
18Now early in the morning, as He was returning to the city, He became hungry. 19And seeing a single fig tree by the road, He went up to it and found nothing on it except leaves only. And He said to it, “May there no longer be fruit from you forever!” And the fig tree withered instantly. 20When the disciples saw this, they were amazed and said, “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?”
21Jesus answered and said to them, “Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' it will happen. 22And everything, whatever you ask for in prayer while believing, you will receive.”
23And when He entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people approached Him while He was teaching, saying, “By what kind of authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?” 24Jesus answered and said to them, “I will also ask you one question, which if you tell Me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things: 25The baptism of John—where was it from? From heaven or from men?” But they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,' He will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?' 26But if we say, ‘From men,' we fear the crowd, for they all hold John to be a prophet.” 27And they answered Jesus and said, “We do not know.” He also said to them, “Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
The Parable of the Two Sons
28"What do you think? A man had two children. He went to the first and said, ‘Child, go work in the vineyard today.’ 29And he answered and said, ‘I will not,' but later, having a change of heart, he went. 30And approaching the second, he said the same thing. And that one answered and said, ‘I will go, sir,' yet he did not go. 31Which of the two did the will of the father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him; but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did believe him. And even after you saw this, you did not have a change of heart afterward so as to believe him.”
The Parable of the Wicked Tenants
36  πάλιν ἀπέστειλεν ἄλλους δούλους πλείονας τῶν πρώτων, καὶ ἐποίησαν αὐτοῖς ὡσαύτως. 37  ὕστερον δὲ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ λέγων, Ἐντραπήσονται τὸν υἱόν μου. 38  οἱ δὲ γεωργοὶ ἰδόντες τὸν υἱὸν εἶπον ἐν ἑαυτοῖς, Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ κληρονόμος· δεῦτε ἀποκτείνωμεν αὐτὸν καὶ σχῶμεν τὴν κληρονομίαν αὐτοῦ, 39  καὶ λαβόντες αὐτὸν ἐξέβαλον ἔξω τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος καὶ ἀπέκτειναν. 40  ὅταν οὖν ἔλθῃ ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος, τί ποιήσει τοῖς γεωργοῖς ἐκείνοις;
36"Again, he sent other servants, more than the first, and they treated them the same way. 37Finally, he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38But when the tenants saw the son, they said among themselves, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.’ 39And they took him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. 40Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”
41They said to Him, “He will put those wretches to a wretched death and lease the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him the fruit in their seasons.” 42Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:
'The stone which the builders rejected, This very stone has become the cornerstone; This came from the Lord, And it is marvelous in our eyes'; {Psalm 117 (118):22-23}
43"Because of this, I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing its fruit. 44[And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will crush him like dust.]”
45When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard His parables, they knew that He was speaking about them. 46Although they were seeking to arrest Him, they feared the crowds, since the people held Him to be a prophet.
