Chapter 22
The Parable of the Wedding Feast
1And answering again, Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying: 2"The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man, a king, who prepared a wedding feast for his son. 3And he sent his servants to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast, but they were not willing to come. 4Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my banquet; my bulls and fattened cattle have been slaughtered and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast!’ 5But they, paying no mind, went away—one to his own farm, another to his business; 6while the rest, seizing his servants, mistreated them and killed them. 7And the king was enraged, and sending his troops, he destroyed those murderers and burned their city.
8"Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. 9Therefore, go to the thoroughfares of the roads and invite as many as you find to the wedding feast.’ 10And those servants went out into the roads and gathered everyone they found, both evil and good; and the wedding hall was filled with guests.
11"But when the king entered to look over the guests, he saw a man there not dressed in wedding clothes. 12And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ But he was speechless. 13Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and throw him into the outer darkness; in that day there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14For many are called, but few are chosen.”
The Question of Paying Taxes
15  Τότε πορευθέντες οἱ Φαρισαῖοι συμβούλιον ἔλαβον ὅπως αὐτὸν παγιδεύσωσιν ἐν λόγῳ. 16  καὶ ἀποστέλλουσιν αὐτῷ τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτῶν μετὰ τῶν Ἡρῳδιανῶν λέγοντες, Διδάσκαλε, οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἀληθὴς εἶ καὶ τὴν ὁδὸν τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ διδάσκεις καὶ οὐ μέλει σοι περὶ οὐδενός· οὐ γὰρ βλέπεις εἰς πρόσωπον ἀνθρώπων. 17  εἰπὲ οὖν ἡμῖν τί σοι δοκεῖ· ἔξεστιν δοῦναι κῆνσον Καίσαρι ἢ οὔ;
15Then the Pharisees went and plotted together how they might trap Him in His speech. 16And they sent their disciples to Him along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that You are truthful and that You teach the way of God in truth, and that You do not defer to anyone; for You do not look at the face of men. 17Tell us then, what do You think? Is it lawful to pay the head-tax to Caesar, or not?”
18But Jesus, perceiving their malice, said, “Why are you testing Me, hypocrites? 19Show Me the coin used for the tax.” And they brought Him a denarius. 20And He said to them, “Whose image is this, and whose inscription?” 21They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” Then He said to them, “Therefore, give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 22And when they heard this, they were amazed; and leaving Him, they went away.
The Sadducees and the Resurrection
{Deut.
23On that day, Sadducees approached Him—those who say there is no resurrection—and they questioned Him, 24saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If someone dies without having children, his brother shall marry the widow as next-of-kin and raise up offspring for his brother.’ {Deut. 25:5} 25Now there were seven brothers among us. The first, after marrying, died; and since he had no offspring, he left his wife to his brother. 26The same happened with the second and the third, right down to the seventh. 27Finally, after everyone else, the woman died. 28In the resurrection, then, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.”
29But Jesus answered and said to them, “You are led astray because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying: 32‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? {Exodus 3:6} He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” 33And when the crowds heard this, they were spellbound by His teaching.
The Greatest Commandment
34But when the Pharisees heard that He had muzzled the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35And one of them, an expert in the Law, questioned Him as a test: 36"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ {Deut. 6:5} 38This is the great and primary commandment. 39And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ {Lev. 19:18} 40On these two commandments hang the whole Law and the Prophets.”
The Question about David’s Son
41Now while the Pharisees were gathered, Jesus questioned them, 42saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is He?” They said to Him, “The son of David.” 43He said to them, “How then does David, by the Spirit, call Him ‘Lord,’ saying: 44
‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at My right hand
until I put Your enemies under Your feet
”’? {Psalm 109 (110):1}
45If then David calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his son?” 46And no one was able to answer Him a single word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to question Him any further.
