Chapter 9
Judgment on the Surrounding Nations
9:1 An oracle of the word of the Lord: In the land of Sedrach and Damascus is His sacrifice (thysia autou), because the Lord looks upon men and all the tribes of Israel. 2 And Hamath is in her borders; Tyre and Sidon, because they were very wise. 3 And Tyre built fortifications for herself, and she heaped up silver like dust and gathered gold like the mud of the streets.
4 For this reason, the Lord will inherit her and strike her power into the sea, and she shall be consumed in fire. 5 Ashkelon shall see and be afraid, and Gaza shall be in great pain, and Ekron, because she was put to shame at her transgression (paraptōmati); and the king shall perish from Gaza, and Ashkelon shall not be inhabited. 6 And foreigners (allogeneis) shall dwell in Ashdod, and I will bring down the pride of the Philistines. 7 And I will take away their blood from their mouth and their abominations from between their teeth, and this one also shall be left for our God, and they shall be like a captain of a thousand (chiliarchos) in Judah, and Ekron like the Jebusite. 8 And I will set up a bulwark (anastēma) for My house so that no one may pass through or return, and no driver shall ever again come upon them, for now I have seen with My eyes.
The King of Peace
9 "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; proclaim it, O daughter of Jerusalem; behold, your King comes to you, righteous and saving, He is meek (praÿs) and mounted upon a beast of burden (ypozy gion) and a young foal. 10 And He will utterly destroy the chariots from Ephraim and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle-bow shall be destroyed, and abundance and peace from the nations; and He shall rule the waters as far as the sea and the outlets (diekvolas) of the rivers of the earth."
Deliverance of Judah and Ephraim
12 καθήσεσθε ἐν ὀχυρώματι, δέσμιοι τῆς συναγωγῆς, καὶ ἀντὶ μιᾶς ἡμέρας παροικεσίας σου διπλᾶ ἀνταποδώσω σοι· 13 διότι ἐνέτεινά σε, Ἰούδα, ἐμαυτῷ τόξον, ἔπλησα τὸν Ἐφραὶμ καὶ ἐπεγερῶ τὰ τέκνα σου, Σιών, ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα τῶν Ἑλλήνων καὶ ψηλαφήσω σὲ ὡς ῥομφαίαν μαχητοῦ· 11 "And as for you, by the blood of your covenant, you have sent forth your prisoners out of a pit that has no water. 12 You shall sit in a stronghold, O prisoners of the assembly (synagōgēs), and for one day of your sojourning I will repay you double. 13 For I have bent you, Judah, for Myself as a bow; I have filled it with Ephraim; and I will rouse your children, Zion, against the children of the Greeks (Ellēnōn), and I will handle you like the sword of a warrior.
14 And the Lord shall be over them, and a bolt shall go forth like lightning; and the Lord Almighty shall sound the trumpet and proceed in the tossing of His threat (salō apeilēs autou). 15 The Lord Almighty will shield them, and they shall consume them and bury them under sling-stones, and they shall drink them like wine and fill the altar like sacrificial bowls. 16 And the Lord will save them in that day, His people like sheep, for holy stones roll upon His land. 17 For if there is anything good of His, and if there is anything beautiful from Him—it is grain for the young men and fragrant wine for the virgins."
