Chapter 19
Behold the Man
1Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2And the soldiers, after weaving a crown out of thorns, placed it on his head and threw a purple robe around him. 3They kept coming up to him and saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and they kept striking him in the face. 4Pilate went outside again and said to them, “Look, I am bringing him out to you so you may know that I find no grounds for a charge against him.” 5So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, “Behold, the man!” 6When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him; for I find no grounds for a charge in him.” 7The Judeans answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.”
Authority from Above
8Now when Pilate heard this statement, he became even more afraid. 9He entered the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 10So Pilate said to him, “Are you refusing to speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and I have authority to crucify you?” 11Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given to you from above. For this reason, the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.” 12From then on, Pilate tried to release him, but the Judeans kept shouting, “If you release this man, you are no ‘Friend of Caesar'! Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.”
The Final Sentence
13When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called “The Stone Pavement,” but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14Now it was the Day of Preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. He said to the Judeans, “Look, your King!” 15But they cried out, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your king?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”
The Crucifixion of the King
16So at that point, Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So they took charge of Jesus, 17and carrying the cross for himself, he went out to the place called “Place of the Skull,” which in Hebrew is called Golgotha. 18There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus in the middle. 19Pilate also wrote a notice and put it on the cross; it was written: JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS. 20Many of the Judeans read this notice, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. 21Then the chief priests of the Judeans said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that he said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’” 22Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
The Soldiers and the Seamless Tunic
23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, a part for each soldier, and also his tunic. Now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top down. 24So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it will be.” This was so the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:
  “They divided my clothes among themselves,
and for my clothing they cast lots.
” {Psalm 21(22):18}
So this is what the soldiers did.
25 Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” 27Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour, the disciple took her into his own home.
The Finished Work
28After this, Jesus, knowing that everything was now finished, said—so that the Scripture might be reached its goal—“I am thirsty.” 29A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they put a sponge soaked in the sour wine on a branch of hyssop and brought it up to his mouth. 30When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished!” And bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
The Witness of the Pierced Side
31Now since it was the Day of Preparation, the Judeans did not want the bodies to remain on the crosses during the Sabbath—for that Sabbath was a “great day.” So they asked Pilate to have the victims’ legs broken and the bodies taken away. 32Consequently, the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and then of the other who had been crucified with him. 33But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.
35  καὶ ὁ ἑωρακὼς μεμαρτύρηκεν, καὶ ἀληθινὴ αὐτοῦ ἐστιν ἡ μαρτυρία, καὶ ἐκεῖνος οἶδεν ὅτι ἀληθῆ λέγει, ἵνα καὶ ὑμεῖς πιστεύητε. 36  ἐγένετο γὰρ ταῦτα ἵνα ἡ γραφὴ πληρωθῇ, Ὀστοῦν οὐ συντριβήσεται αὐτοῦ. {Exodus 12:46} 37  καὶ πάλιν ἑτέρα γραφὴ λέγει, Ὄψονται εἰς ὃν ἐξεκέντησαν. {Zech 12:10}
35The one who has seen this has testified to it, and his testimony is true; he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. 36For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “Not a bone of his shall be broken.” {Exodus 12:46} 37And again, another Scripture says: “They will look on the one whom they have pierced.” {Zech 12:10}
The Burial of Jesus
38After these things, Joseph of Arimathea—who was a disciple of Jesus, though a secret one for fear of the Judeans—asked Pilate if he could take away the body of Jesus. Pilate gave permission. So he came and took the body away. 39Nicodemus, the man who had first come to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about a hundred pounds.
40So they took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths with the aromatic spices, according to the Jewish burial custom. 41Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden was a new tomb in which no one had ever yet been laid. 42Because it was the Jewish Day of Preparation and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
