Chapter 18
The Arrest in the Garden
1Having said these things, Jesus went out with his disciples across the winter-flowing Kidron Valley to where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered. 2Now Judas, the one betraying him, also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. 3So Judas, having obtained the cohort of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
4Then Jesus, knowing everything that was coming upon him, stepped forward and said to them, “Whom are you looking for?” 5They answered him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He said to them, “I AM.” And Judas, the one betraying him, was also standing there with them. 6When, therefore, he said to them, “I AM,” they drew back and fell to the ground. 7So again he asked them, “Whom are you looking for?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” 8Jesus answered, “I told you that I AM. So if you are looking for me, let these men go.” 9This was to fulfill the word he had spoken: “Of those whom you have given me, I have not lost even one.”
10 Σίμων οὖν Πέτρος ἔχων μάχαιραν εἵλκυσεν αὐτὴν καὶ ἔπαισεν τὸν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως δοῦλον καὶ ἀπέκοψεν αὐτοῦ τὸ ὠτάριον τὸ δεξιόν· ἦν δὲ ὄνομα τῷ δούλῳ Μάλχος. 11 εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τῷ Πέτρῳ, Βάλε τὴν μάχαιραν εἰς τὴν θήκην· τὸ ποτήριον ὃ δέδωκέν μοι ὁ πατὴρ οὐ μὴ πίω αὐτό;
10Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) 11Jesus, therefore, said to Peter, “Put the sword into its sheath. The cup that the Father has given me—shall I certainly not drink it?”
Jesus Before Annas
12So the cohort and the commander and the officers of the Judeans seized Jesus and bound him. 13They led him first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14Now it was Caiaphas who had advised the Judeans that it was better for one man to die on behalf of the people.
Peter’s First Denial
15Now Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard, 16but Peter was standing outside at the door. So the other disciple, the acquaintance of the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought Peter in. 17Then the servant girl who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” He said, “I am not.” 18Now the slaves and the officers were standing around a charcoal fire they had made because it was cold, and they were warming themselves. Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.
The High Priest Questions Jesus
19The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching. 20Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Judeans gather, and I said nothing in secret. 21Why do you question me? Question those who have heard what I spoke to them; look, these people know what I said.” 22When he had said this, one of the officers standing by gave Jesus a blow to the face, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” 23Jesus answered him, “If I spoke wrongly, testify concerning the wrong; but if I spoke rightly, why do you strike me?” 24Then Annas sent him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter’s Second and Third Denials
25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26One of the slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “didn’t I see you in the garden with him?” 27Peter then denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed.
Jesus Before Pilate
28Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the Praetorium so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. 29So Pilate went out to them and asked, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” 30They answered and said to him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have handed him over to you.” 31Then Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him according to your own law.” The Judeans said to him, “It is not legal for us to put anyone to death.” 32This was to fulfill the word of Jesus which he spoke, signaling by what kind of death he was about to die.
33 Εἰσῆλθεν οὖν πάλιν εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον ὁ Πιλᾶτος καὶ ἐφώνησεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων; 34 ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς, Ἀπὸ σεαυτοῦ σὺ τοῦτο λέγεις ἢ ἄλλοι εἶπόν σοι περὶ ἐμοῦ; 35 ἀπεκρίθη ὁ Πιλᾶτος, Μήτι ἐγὼ Ἰουδαῖός εἰμι; τὸ ἔθνος τὸ σὸν καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς παρέδωκάν σε ἐμοί· τί ἐποίησας; 36 ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς, Ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου· εἰ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου ἦν ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμὴ, οἱ ὑπηρέται οἱ ἐμοὶ ἠγωνίζοντο [ἄν] ἵνα μὴ παραδοθῶ τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις· νῦν δὲ ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐντεῦθεν. 37 εἶπεν οὖν αὐτῷ ὁ Πιλᾶτος, Οὐκοῦν βασιλεὺς εἶ σύ; ἀπεκρίθη ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Σὺ λέγεις ὅτι βασιλεύς εἰμι. ἐγὼ εἰς τοῦτο γεγέννημαι καὶ εἰς τοῦτο ἐλήλυθα εἰς τὸν κόσμον, ἵνα μαρτυρήσω τῇ ἀληθείᾳ· πᾶς ὁ ὢν ἐκ τῆς ἀληθείας ἀκούει μου τῆς φωνῆς. 38 λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Πιλᾶτος, Τί ἐστιν ἀλήθεια;
33So Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” 34Jesus answered, “Do you say this from yourself, or did others tell you about me?” 35Pilate answered, “I’m not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?” 36Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Judeans. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” 37Pilate then said to him, “So then, you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.” 38Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”
The Choice of Barabbas
After saying this, he went out again to the Judeans and said to them, “I find no grounds for a charge in him. 39But you have a custom that I should release one prisoner for you at the Passover. Do you want me, therefore, to release to you ‘the King of the Jews’?” 40They cried out again, saying, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a bandit.
