Chapter 16
The Resurrection Announcement
1And when the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought aromatic spices so that they might go and anoint Him. 2And very early on the first day of the week, they come to the tomb as the sun was rising. 3And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4And looking up, they observe that the stone has been rolled back—for it was exceedingly large.
5And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, wearing a white robe, and they were utterly amazed. 6But he says to them, “Do not be amazed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, the One who was crucified. He has been raised; He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. 7But go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is going ahead of you into Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.” 8And going out, they fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
The Shorter Ending of Mark
But they reported briefly to Peter and his companions all the things that had been commanded. And after these things, Jesus Himself sent out through them, from east to west, the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation. Amen.
The Longer Ending of Mark
9Now after He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had driven out seven demons. 10She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and weeping. 11And when those men heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they refused to believe it.
12After these things, He appeared in a different form to two of them as they were walking, while they were traveling into the country. 13And they went back and reported it to the rest, but they did not believe them either.
The Disciples Commissioned
14Later, He appeared to the Eleven themselves as they were reclining at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart because they had not believed those who saw Him after He had been raised. 15And He said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the entire creation. 16The one who believes and is baptized will be saved, but the one who refuses to believe will be condemned. 17And these signs will accompany those who believe: in My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18[and in their hands] they will pick up snakes; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will certainly not harm them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
19So then, after the Lord Jesus spoke to them, He was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through the accompanying signs.
