Chapter 15
Conflict Over Circumcision
1Now some men came down from Judea and began teaching the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” 2When a major commotion and debate arose between them and Paul and Barnabas, the brothers appointed Paul, Barnabas, and some others from their group to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders concerning this issue. 3So, being sent on their way by the church, they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, describing in detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and they brought great joy to all the brothers. 4When they arrived in Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church, the apostles, and the elders, and they reported everything God had done with them. 5But some of those from the sect of the Pharisees who had believed stood up and said, “It is necessary to circumcise them and to command them to keep the Law of Moses.”
Peter’s Address to the Council
6The apostles and the elders gathered together to look into this matter. 7After much debate had taken place, Peter stood up and said to them: “Brothers, you yourselves know that in the early days, God chose among you that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. 8And God, the Knower of Hearts, bore witness to them by giving them the Holy Spirit just as He did to us; 9and He made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith.
10Now then, why are you putting God to the test by placing a yoke upon the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to carry? 11On the contrary, we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus in the same way as they are.”
12The whole assembly became silent, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul as they described all the signs and wonders God had performed among the Gentiles through them.
The Judgment of James
13After they had finished speaking, James responded, saying: “Brothers, listen to me. 14Simeon has described how God first took concern to take from among the Gentiles a people for His name. 15And with this the words of the Prophets agree, just as it is written: 16‘After these things I will return And I will rebuild the fallen tent of David; Its ruins I will rebuild, And I will restore it, 17So that the rest of humanity may seek the Lord, Even all the Gentiles over whom My name has been invoked,’ Says the Lord, who makes these things {Amos 9:11-12} 18known from of old. 19Therefore, my judgment is not to burden those from among the Gentiles who are turning to God, 20but to write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from what has been strangled, and from blood. 21For from ancient generations, Moses has had those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.”
The Letter to the Gentile Churches
22Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas—Judas called Barsabbas and Silas, leading men among the brothers. 23They sent this letter with them: “The apostles and the elders, your brothers, to the brothers of Gentile origin in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia: Greetings. 24Since we have heard that some of our number have disturbed you with their words, unsettling your souls—men to whom we gave no such instructions— 25it seemed good to us, having come to one mind, to choose men and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27Therefore we have sent Judas and Silas, and they themselves will report these same things by word of mouth. 28For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay no further burden upon you except these necessary things: 29to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from what is strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these things, you will do well. Farewell.”
The Response in Antioch
30So when they were sent off, they went down to Antioch; and having gathered the congregation together, they delivered the letter. 31When they read it, the people rejoiced at the encouragement. 32Judas and Silas, who were also prophets themselves, encouraged and strengthened the brothers with a long message. 33After they had spent some time there, they were sent off with a blessing of peace from the brothers to those who had sent them. 34[But it seemed good to Silas to remain there, and Judas alone departed.] 35Paul and Barnabas stayed in Antioch, teaching and proclaiming the good news of the word of the Lord, along with many others.
The Conflict Between Paul and Barnabas
36After some days, Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us return now and visit the brothers in every city where we proclaimed the word of the Lord, to see how they are doing.” 37Now Barnabas was determined to take along John, also called Mark. 38But Paul kept insisting that they should not take along this man—the one who had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not accompanied them into the work. 39There arose such a sharp disagreement that they parted ways from one another; Barnabas took Mark and sailed away to Cyprus, 40while Paul chose Silas and departed, having been commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord. 41And he traveled through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.
