Chapter 4
Arrest of John and Peter
1While they were still speaking to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple guard, and the Sadducees came upon them, 2deeply annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming the resurrection from the dead in the case of Jesus. 3They laid hands on them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4But many of those who heard the message believed, and the number of the men grew to about five thousand.
The Trial Before the Sanhedrin
5  Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐπὶ τὴν αὔριον συναχθῆναι αὐτῶν τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους καὶ τοὺς γραμματεῖς ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ, 6  καὶ Ἅννας ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς καὶ Καϊάφας καὶ Ἰωάννης καὶ Ἀλέξανδρος καὶ ὅσοι ἦσαν ἐκ γένους ἀρχιερατικοῦ, 7  καὶ στήσαντες αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ μέσῳ ἐπυνθάνοντο, ἐν ποίᾳ δυνάμει ἢ ἐν ποίῳ ὀνόματι ἐποιήσατε τοῦτο ὑμεῖς;
5On the next day, their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem, 6including Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly lineage. 7After standing Peter and John in the center of the room, they began to inquire: “By what power or in what name did you—people like you—do this?”
8  Τότε Πέτρος πλησθεὶς πνεύματος ἁγίου εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς, ἄρχοντες τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ πρεσβύτεροι, 9  εἰ ἡμεῖς σήμερον ἀνακρινόμεθα ἐπὶ εὐεργεσίᾳ ἀνθρώπου ἀσθενοῦς ἐν τίνι οὗτος σέσωσται, 10  γνωστὸν ἔστω πᾶσιν ὑμῖν καὶ παντὶ τῷ λαῷ Ἰσραὴλ ὅτι ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ Ναζωραίου ὃν ὑμεῖς ἐσταυρώσατε, ὃν ὁ θεὸς ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν, ἐν τούτῳ οὗτος παρέστηκεν ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν ὑγιής. 11  οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ λίθος, ὁ ἐξουθενηθεὶς ὑφ' ὑμῶν τῶν οἰκοδόμων, ὁ γενόμενος εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας. {Ps. 118:22}
8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers of the people and elders, 9if we are being examined today regarding a good deed done to a sick man, as to how this man has been healed, 10let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—whom you crucified, but whom God raised from the dead—by this name this man stands before you healthy. 11This Jesus is ‘The stone, having been treated as nothing by you, the builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.' {Ps. 118:22}
The Sanhedrin’s Dilemma
13Now when they observed the boldness of Peter and John and perceived that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed; and they began to recognize them as having been with Jesus. 14And seeing the man who had been healed standing there with them, they had nothing to say in response. 15But having ordered them to step outside the Sanhedrin, they began to confer with one another, 16saying, “What should we do with these men? For that a noteworthy sign has happened through them is plain to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we are not able to deny it. 17But so that it spreads no further among the people, let us threaten them to speak no longer in this name to anyone.” 18And having called them in, they commanded them not to utter a sound or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge; 20for we are not able to stop speaking about what we saw and heard.” 21And having threatened them further, they released them, finding no way to punish them because of the people, for everyone was glorifying God over what had happened. 22For the man on whom this sign of healing had occurred was more than forty years old.
The Prayer for Boldness
23  ἀπολυθέντες δὲ ἦλθον πρὸς τοὺς ἰδίους καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν ὅσα πρὸς αὐτοὺς οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι εἶπαν. 24  οἱ δὲ ἀκούσαντες ὁμοθυμαδὸν ἦραν φωνὴν πρὸς τὸν θεὸν καὶ εἶπαν, δέσποτα, σὺ ὁ ποιήσας τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐν αὐτοῖς, 25  ὁ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν διὰ πνεύματος ἁγίου στόματος Δαυὶδ παιδὸς σου εἰπών, Ἱνατί ἐφρύαξαν ἔθνη καὶ λαοὶ ἐμελέτησαν κενά; 26  παρέστησαν οἱ βασιλεῖς τῆς γῆς καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες συνήχθησαν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ κατὰ τοῦ κυρίου καὶ κατὰ τοῦ Χριστοῦ αὐτοῦ. {Ps. 2:1-2}
23After they were released, they went to their own people and reported everything the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24And when they heard it, they raised their voice to God with one mind and said, “Sovereign Lord, You are the one who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, 25who said by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of our father David, Your servant: ‘Why did the nations rage, and the peoples plot in vain? 26The kings of the earth took their stand, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against His Christ.' {Ps. 2:1-2}
27For in truth, there were gathered together in this city against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose predestined to occur. 29And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to Your servants to speak Your word with all boldness, 30while You stretch out Your hand for healing, and signs and wonders occur through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.” 31And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking the word of God with boldness.
The Unity and Generosity of the Believers
32Now the entire group of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; not even a single person claimed that any of his possessions were his own, but everything they had was held in common. 33And with great power the apostles continued to give their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.
34For there was not a needy person among them; for all who were owners of lands or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sales, 35and lay them at the feet of the apostles. Then it was distributed to each, according as anyone had need.
The Example of Barnabas
36Now Joseph, who was nicknamed Barnabas by the apostles (which translated means “Son of Encouragement”), a Levite and a Cypriot by birth, 37sold a field that belonged to him, brought the money, and laid it at the feet of the apostles.
