Chapter 31
The Destruction of the Pride of Moab
Thus says the Lord: "Woe to Nebo, for it has perished! Kiriathaim has been taken; Amath is put to shame and defeated." 31.2 [MT 48:2] "There is no longer a healing for Moab, a glorying in Heshbon; they have plotted evils against her. We have cut her off from being a nation, and she shall be utterly silenced; a sword shall follow behind you." 31.3 [MT 48:3] "For a voice of those crying out from Horonaim: 'Destruction and great crushing!'" 31.4 [MT 48:4] "Moab is crushed; announce it as far as Zoar." 31.5 [MT 48:5] "For Aloth is filled with weeping; he shall go up weeping on the way to Horonaim—you have heard a cry of crushing." |
The Exile of Chemosh
| 31.6 [MT 48:6] "Flee and save your lives, and you shall be like a wild donkey in the desert." 31.7 [MT 48:7] "Since you trusted in your strongholds, you also shall be captured; and Chemosh shall go out into exile, his priests and his rulers together." 31.8 [MT 48:8] "And destruction shall come upon every city, and no city shall be saved; the valley shall perish and the plain shall be utterly destroyed, just as the Lord said." 31.9 [MT 48:9] "Give signals to Moab, for by a touch she shall be kindled, and all her cities shall become an untrodden waste. From where shall an inhabitant come to her?" 31.10 [MT 48:10] "Cursed is the one doing the works of the Lord carelessly, withholding his sword from blood." |
The Tilted Jar
| 31.11 [MT 48:11] "Moab has been at ease from youth and was trusting in his glory; he has not been poured from vessel to vessel and has not gone into exile. Therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent has not failed." 31.12 [MT 48:12] "Therefore behold, days are coming," says the Lord, "and I will send to him those who tilt him; and they shall tilt him and make his vessels thin and smash his horns." 31.13 [MT 48:13] "And Moab shall be put to shame by Chemosh, just as the house of Israel was put to shame by Bethel, their hope, in whom they trusted." |
The Shattered Scepter
17 [MT=48:17] κινήσατε αὐτῷ, πάντες κυκλόθεν αὐτοῦ, πάντες εἰδότες ὄνομα αὐτοῦ· εἴπατε πῶς συνετρίβη βακτηρία εὐκλεής, ῥάβδος μεγαλώματος; | 31.14 [MT 48:14] "How will you say, 'We are strong and a man powerful in matters of war'?" 31.15 [MT 48:15] "Moab has perished, his city [is gone], and his chosen young men have gone down to the slaughter." 31.16 [MT 48:16] "The day of Moab is near to come, and his calamity is very swift." 31.17 [MT 48:17] "Mourn for him, all you who surround him, all who know his name! Say: 'How the glorious scepter is broken, the staff of majesty!'" |
The Flight from Dibon to Aroer
19 [MT=48:19] ἐφ' ὁδοῦ στῆθι καὶ ἔπιδε, καθημένη ἐν Ἀροήρ, καὶ ἐρώτησον φεύγοντα καὶ σῳζόμενον καὶ εἰπόν τί ἐγένετο; | 31.18 [MT 48:18] "Come down from glory and sit in the dampness, you who inhabit Dibon! For Moab has perished; the one ravaging your stronghold has come up against you." 31.19 [MT 48:19] "Stand by the road and look out, you who inhabit Aroer; ask the one fleeing and the one being saved, and say: 'What has happened?'" |
| 31.20 [MT 48:20] "Moab is put to shame, for she is crushed; wail and cry out! Announce in Arnon that Moab has perished." 31.21 [MT 48:21] "And judgment comes upon the land of Misor: upon Holon and Jahzah and Mephaath, 31.22 [MT 48:22] and upon Dibon and Nebo and Beth-Diblathaim, 31.23 [MT 48:23] and upon Kiriathaim and Beth-Gamul and Beth-Meon, 31.24 [MT 48:24] and upon Kerioth and Bozrah and all the cities of Moab, far and near." 31.25 [MT 48:25] "The horn of Moab is broken, and his arm is crushed." |
The Drunkenness of Pride
| 31.26 [MT 48:26] "Make him drunk, for he magnified himself against the Lord; and Moab shall slap with his hand and he also shall be a laughingstock." 31.27 [MT 48:27] "Was not Israel a laughingstock to you? Was he found among your thefts, that you should wage war against him?" 31.28 [MT 48:28] "The inhabitants of Moab abandoned the cities and dwelt in the rocks; they became like doves nesting in the rocks at the mouth of a pit." |
The Haughty Heart
| 31.29 [MT 48:29] "I heard of the insolence of Moab—he was very insolent—his insolence and his arrogance, and his heart was lifted up." 31.30 [MT 48:30] "And I knew his works; his sufficiency was not enough—he did not act so." |
The Silent Winepress
| 31.31 [MT 48:31] "Therefore wail for Moab on every side! Cry out for the men of Kir-Heres in their drought." 31.32 [MT 48:32] "With the weeping of Jazer I will weep for you, O vine of Sibmah; your branches passed over the sea, they touched Jazer. Destruction has fallen upon your autumn fruit and upon your grape-gatherers." 31.33 [MT 48:33] "Joy and gladness have been swept away from Moab, and wine was in your vats; in the morning they did not tread, nor in the evening—they did not cry out 'Hedad!'" 31.34 [MT 48:34] "From the cry of Heshbon as far as Elealeh their cities gave forth their voice; from Zoar to Horonaim and Eglath-Shelishiyah, for even the water of Nimrim shall be for a burning." |
The Broken Vessel
| 31.35 [MT 48:35] "And I will destroy Moab," says the Lord, "the one going up to the altar and burning incense to his gods." 31.36 [MT 48:36] "Therefore my heart shall moan like flutes for Moab; my heart shall moan like a flute for the men of Kir-Heres. Therefore the things he acquired have perished from man." 31.37 [MT 48:37] "Every head in every place they shall shave, and every beard shall be shaved; and all hands shall be cut, and upon every loin shall be sackcloth." 31.38 [MT 48:38] "And upon all the roofs of Moab and in her squares, for I have crushed Moab," says the Lord, "like a vessel for which there is no use." 31.39 [MT 48:39] "How has he changed? How has Moab turned his back? He was put to shame and Moab became a laughingstock and an object of anger to all those around her." |
The Snare and the Pit
| 31.40 [MT 48:40] For thus says the Lord: 31.41 [MT 48:41] "Kerioth has been taken, and the strongholds have been seized." 31.42 [MT 48:42] "And Moab shall be destroyed from among the people, because he magnified himself against the Lord." 31.43 [MT 48:43] "Snare and fear and pit are upon you, O inhabitant of Moab!" 31.44 [MT 48:44] "The one fleeing from the face of fear shall fall into the pit, and the one coming up out of the pit shall be captured in the snare; for I will bring these things upon Moab in the year of her visitation." |
