Chapter 25
Limits of Corporal Punishment and Kindness to Animals
1 If there is a dispute between men and they come into court and they judge, and they justify the righteous man and condemn the ungodly, 2 then it shall be that if the ungodly man is worthy of stripes, you shall seat him before the judges, and they shall scourge him in their presence according to his ungodliness by number. 3 They shall scourge him forty [times]; they shall not add [more]. If they should add to scourge him with many stripes beyond these, your brother will be disgraced before you.
4 You shall not muzzle an ox while it is threshing.
The Levirate Marriage
5 If brothers dwell together and one of them dies and he has no seed, the wife of the deceased shall not be [married] outside to a man not near of kin; the brother of her husband shall go in to her and take her to himself as a wife and cohabit with her. 6 And it shall be that the child whom she bears shall be established in the name of the deceased, and his name shall not be blotted out from Israel.
7 But if the man does not wish to take the wife of his brother, then the woman shall go up to the gate to the elders and say, "My husband’s brother refuses to raise up the name of his brother in Israel; my husband’s brother was not willing." 8 And the elders of his city shall call him and speak to him; and if he stands and says, "I do not wish to take her," 9 then his brother’s wife shall approach him before the elders and shall loose his sandal—one of them—from his foot and spit in his face, and responding she shall say, "Thus shall they do to the man who will not build up the house of his brother." 10 And his name shall be called in Israel, "The house of him whose sandal was loosed."
A Severe Prohibition and Just Weights
11 If men are fighting together, a man with his brother, and the wife of one of them approaches to rescue her husband from the hand of the one striking him, and stretching out her hand she seizes his private parts (didymōn), 12 you shall cut off her hand; your eye shall not spare her.
13 There shall not be in your bag weight and weight, a great and a small. 14 There shall not be in your house measure and measure, a great and a small. 15 A true and just weight shall be yours, and a true and just measure shall be yours, so that you may be long-lived upon the land which the Lord your God is giving to you as an allotment. 16 For everyone doing these things—everyone doing what is unjust—is an abomination to the Lord your God.
The Command Against Amalek
17 Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you were coming out of Egypt, 18 how he resisted you on the way and cut off your rear guard (ouragian), those who were weary behind you, while you were hungry and weary, and he did not fear God. 19 And it shall be, whenever the Lord your God gives you rest from all your enemies round about you in the land which the Lord your God gives to you as an allotment to inherit, you shall blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven, and you shall not forget.
