Chapter 23
Warning Against the Scribes and Pharisees
1Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, 2saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves on the seat of Moses. 3Therefore, do and observe everything they tell you, but do not do according to their works; for they speak, but they do not act. 4They tie up heavy burdens [and hard to carry] and lay them on people’s shoulders, yet they themselves are not willing to move them with so much as a finger.
5"They do all their works to be seen by people; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels. 6They love the place of honor at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues, 7and greetings in the marketplaces, and being called ‘Rabbi’ by people.
8"But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi'; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for One is your Father, the heavenly One. 10Nor are you to be called ‘instructors,’ because one is your Instructor—the Christ. 11But the greatest among you shall be your servant. 12Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”
The Seven Woes
13"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you lock the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces; for you yourselves do not enter, nor do you allow those trying to enter to go in.
14[[Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you devour widows’ houses and offer long prayers as a pretense; for this reason you will receive a more severe judgment.]]
15Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you traverse sea and dry land to make a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of Gehenna as yourselves.
16Woe to you, blind guides! You who say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17You blind fools! For which is greater: the gold, or the temple that made the gold holy? 18And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.’ 19You blind men! For which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift holy? 20Therefore, the one who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it; 21and the one who swears by the temple swears by it and by the One who dwells in it; 22and the one who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by the One who sits upon it.
23Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you pay a tenth of your mint and dill and cumin, yet you have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the former. 24You blind guides! Straining out a gnat but swallowing a camel!
25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside of it may also become clean.
27Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside appear beautiful, but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of uncleanness. 28So you also, on the outside, appear righteous to people, but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
29 Οὐαὶ ὑμῖν, γραμματεῖς καὶ Φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί, ὅτι οἰκοδομεῖτε τοὺς τάφους τῶν προφητῶν καὶ κοσμεῖτε τὰ μνημεῖα τῶν δικαίων, 30 καὶ λέγετε, Εἰ ἤμεθα ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν, οὐκ ἄν ἤμεθα αὐτῶν κοινωνοὶ ἐν τῷ αἵματι τῶν προφητῶν. 31 ὥστε μαρτυρεῖτε ἑαυτοῖς ὅτι υἱοί ἐστε τῶν φονευσάντων τοὺς προφήτας. 32 καὶ ὑμεῖς πληρώσατε τὸ μέτρον τῶν πατέρων ὑμῶν. 33 ὄφεις γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, πῶς φύγητε ἀπὸ τῆς κρίσεως τῆς γεέννης;
29Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, 30and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in the blood of the prophets.’ 31Thus you testify against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32Go ahead, fill up the measure of your fathers! 33You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape the judgment of Gehenna?
34Therefore, behold, I am sending to you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from city to city, 35so that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. 36Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.”
Lament over Jerusalem
37 Ἰερουσαλὴμ Ἰερουσαλήμ, ἡ ἀποκτείνουσα τοὺς προφήτας καὶ λιθοβολοῦσα τοὺς ἀπεσταλμένους πρὸς αὐτήν, ποσάκις ἠθέλησα ἐπισυναγαγεῖν τὰ τέκνα σου, ὃν τρόπον ὄρνις ἐπισυνάγει τὰ νοσσία αὐτῆς ὑπὸ τὰς πτέρυγας, καὶ οὐκ ἠθελήσατε. 38 ἰδοὺ ἀφίεται ὑμῖν ὁ οἶκος ὑμῶν ἔρημος. 39 λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν, οὐ μή με ἴδητε ἀπ' ἄρτι ἕως ἄν εἴπητε, Εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου. {Psalm 117 (118):26}
37"Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 38Behold, your house is left to you desolate. 39For I tell you, you will not see Me from now on until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’” {Psalm 117 (118):26}
