Chapter 10
Marriage and Divorce
1  Καὶ ἐκεῖθεν ἀναστὰς ἔρχεται εἰς τὰ ὅρια τῆς Ἰουδαίας [καὶ] πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, καὶ συμπορεύονται πάλιν ὄχλοι πρὸς αὐτόν, καὶ ὡς εἰώθει πάλιν ἐδίδασκεν αὐτούς. 2  καὶ προσελθόντες Φαρισαῖοι ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν εἰ ἔξεστιν ἀνδρὶ γυναῖκα ἀπολῦσαι, πειράζοντες αὐτόν. 3  ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Τί ὑμῖν ἐνετείλατο Μωϋσῆς; 4  οἱ δὲ εἶπαν, Ἐπέτρεψεν Μωϋσῆς βιβλίον ἀποστασίου γράψαι καὶ ἀπολῦσαι. {Deut. 24:1,3}
1And rising up from there, He comes into the regions of Judea and across the Jordan, and again crowds travel together toward Him; and as was His custom, He was teaching them again. 2And Pharisees, coming forward, were questioning Him if it is lawful for a man to divorce his wife, testing Him. 3But He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?” 4And they said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her.” {Deut. 24:1,3}
5But Jesus said to them, “He wrote this commandment for you because of your hardness of heart. 6But from the beginning of creation, He made them male and female. {Gen. 1:27} 7For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother, 8and the two shall become one flesh; {Gen. 2:24} so that they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9Therefore, what God has yoked together, let no human separate.” 10And in the house again, the disciples were questioning Him about this. 11And He says to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; 12and if she, after divorcing her husband, marries another, she commits adultery.”
Jesus Blesses the Children
13And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked them. 14But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, “Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will certainly not enter it.” 16And taking them into His arms, He began to bless them fervently, laying His hands upon them.
The Rich Man and the Kingdom
17And as He was setting out on the road, one man ran up and, falling on his knees before Him, began questioning Him, “Good Teacher, what must I do so that I may inherit eternal life?” 18But Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except one—God. 19You know the commandments: Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.” {Exodus 20:12-16, Deut 5:16-20} 20And he said to Him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” 21And Jesus, looking intently at him, loved him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 22But he, being appalled at the word, went away grieving, for he had many possessions.
Wealth and the Camel’s Eye
23And looking around, Jesus says to His disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” 24And the disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus, answering again, says to them, “Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 26And they were exceedingly astonished, saying to one another, “Then who can be saved?” 27Looking intently at them, Jesus says, “With humans it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”
28Peter began to say to Him, “Look, we have left everything and followed You.” 29Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for My sake and for the sake of the gospel, 30who will not receive a hundred times as much now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, along with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life. 31But many who are first will be last, and the last, first.”
The Third Prediction of the Passion
32Now they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking out in front of them; and they were dazed, and those who followed were afraid. And again taking the Twelve aside, He began to tell them the things that were about to happen to Him: 33"Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn Him to death and deliver Him over to the Gentiles. 34And they will mock Him and spit on Him and flog Him and kill Him, and after three days He will rise.”
The Request of James and John
35And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approach Him, saying to Him, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.” 36And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 37And they said to Him, “Grant to us that we may sit, one at Your right hand and one at Your left, in Your glory.” 38But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39And they said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized you will be baptized; 40but to sit at My right hand or at My left is not Mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”
41And when the ten heard this, they began to be indignant toward James and John. 42And after summoning them, Jesus says to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise high authority over them. 43But it is not so among you; instead, whoever wants to become great among you shall be your servant, 44and whoever wants to be first among you shall be slave of all. 45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
The Healing of Blind Bartimaeus
46And they come to Jericho. And as He was going out from Jericho with His disciples and a substantial crowd, the son of Timaeus, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting beside the road. 47And hearing that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, “Son of David, Jesus, have mercy on me!” 48And many were rebuking him so that he would be silent; but he kept crying out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
49And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they call the blind man, saying to him, “Take courage! Get up, He is calling you.” 50And throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and came to Jesus. 51And answering him, Jesus said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” And the blind man said to Him, “Rabboni, that I may see again.” 52And Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has healed you.” And immediately he saw again and began following Him on the road.
