Chapter 20
The Ten Commandments
1And the Lord spoke all these words, saying: 2"I am the Lord your God, who led you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3There shall be no other gods for you except me. 4You shall not make for yourself an idol, nor any likeness of anything that is in the heaven above, and all that is in the earth below, and all that is in the waters under the earth. 5You shall not bow down to them, nor shall you serve them; for I am the Lord your God, a jealous God, returning the sins of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation to those who hate me, 6and showing mercy to thousands to those who love me and to those who keep my commandments. 7You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain; for the Lord will certainly not cleanse the one who takes His name in vain.
8Remember the day of the Sabbaths to sanctify it. 9Six days you shall labor and do all your works; 10but on the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work in it—you, and your son, and your daughter, your male servant, and your female servant, your ox, and your beast of burden, and all your cattle, and the proselyte sojourning among you. 11For in six days the Lord made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, and He rested on the seventh day; because of this, the Lord blessed the seventh day and sanctified it. 12Honor your father and your mother, so that it may go well with you, and so that you may be long-lived upon the good land which the Lord your God gives to you. 13You shall not commit adultery. 14You shall not steal. 15You shall not murder. 16You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor—a false testimony. 17You shall not covet the wife of your neighbor. You shall not covet the house of your neighbor, nor his field, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his beast of burden, nor any of his cattle, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor."
The Terror of the People
18And all the people saw the voice and the lamps (lightnings), and the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and being afraid, all the people stood from afar. 19And they said to Moses, "You speak to us, and let not God speak to us, lest we die." 20And Moses says to them, "Have courage; for the sake of testing you God has come to you, so that His fear may be in you, that you may not sin." 21And the people stood from afar, but Moses entered into the gloom (gnophon) where God was.
Law of the Altar
22 And the Lord said to Moses: "Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob and report to the sons of Israel: 'You yourselves have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven. 23 You shall not make for yourselves gods of silver, and gods of gold you shall not make for yourselves. 24 An altar of earth you shall make for me, and you shall sacrifice upon it your whole burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your calves in every place where I shall name my name there; and I will come to you and bless you. 25 And if you make an altar of stones for me, you shall not build them of hewn stones; for you have put your tool upon them, and they are defiled. 26 You shall not go up by steps to my altar, so that you might not uncover your nakedness upon it.'"
