The Covenant at Horeb
2 κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν διέθετο πρὸς ὑμᾶς διαθήκην ἐν Χωρήβ· 3 οὐχὶ τοῖς πατράσιν ὑμῶν διέθετο κύριος τὴν διαθήκην ταύτην, ἀλλ' ἢ πρὸς ὑμᾶς, ὑμεῖς ὧδε πάντες ζῶντες σήμερον· 4 πρόσωπον κατὰ πρόσωπον ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐν τῷ ὄρει ἐκ μέσου τοῦ πυρός 5 κἀγὼ εἱστήκειν ἀνὰ μέσον κυρίου καὶ ὑμῶν ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ ἀναγγεῖλαι ὑμῖν τὰ ῥήματα κυρίου, ὅτι ἐφοβήθητε ἀπὸ προσώπου τοῦ πυρὸς καὶ οὐκ ἀνέβητε εἰς τὸ ὄρος λέγων | 1 And Moses called all Israel and said to them: "Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the judgments which I am speaking in your hearing this day; you shall learn them and be careful to do them. 2 The Lord your God made a covenant with you in Horeb. 3 The Lord did not make this covenant with your fathers, but with you—you who are here today, all of us living. 4 Face to face the Lord spoke to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire. 5 And I stood between the Lord and you at that time to announce to you the words of the Lord, because you were afraid of the presence of the fire and did not go up the mountain. He said: |
| 6 'I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 7 There shall be no other gods for you before my face.' |
The Ten Commandments
| 8 'You shall not make for yourself an idol, nor any likeness of anything that is in the heaven above, or that is on the earth below, or that is in the waters under the earth. 9 You shall not bow down to them, nor shall you serve them; for I am the Lord your God, a jealous God, recompensing the sins of fathers upon children to the third and fourth generation to those who hate me, 10 and showing mercy to thousands to those who love me and to those who keep my commandments.' |
| 11 'You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain; for the Lord will certainly not cleanse the one who takes his name in vain.' |
| 12 'Observe the day of the Sabbaths to sanctify it, in the manner that the Lord your God commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your works, 14 but on the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. You shall not do any work in it—you, and your son, and your daughter, your male slave and your female slave, your ox and your beast of burden, and all your cattle, and the proselyte dwelling among you—so that your male slave and your female slave may rest just as you do. 15 And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and a high arm; therefore the Lord your God appointed you to observe the day of the Sabbaths and to sanctify it.' |
| 16 'Honor your father and your mother, in the manner that the Lord your God commanded you, so that it may go well with you, and so that you may live long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving to you.' |
| 17 [MT=5:18] 'You shall not commit adultery.' 18 [MT=5:17] 'You shall not murder.' 19 'You shall not steal.' 20 'You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor—a lying testimony.' |
| 21 'You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. You shall not covet your neighbor's house, nor his field, nor his male slave, nor his female slave, nor his ox, nor his beast of burden, nor any of his cattle, nor anything that belongs to your neighbor.' |
The People's Fear and Moses' Mediation
| 22 These words the Lord spoke to all your assembly on the mountain from the midst of the fire—darkness, gloom, storm, a great voice—and he added no more. And he wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me. 23 And it happened, when you heard the voice from the midst of the fire, while the mountain was burning with fire, that you approached me—all the leaders of your tribes and your elders. 24 And you said, 'Behold, the Lord our God has shown us his glory, and we have heard his voice from the midst of the fire. On this day we have seen that God will speak to man, and he shall live. 25 And now, let us not die, for this great fire will consume us; if we should proceed to hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer, then we shall die. 26 For what flesh is there that has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived? 27 You approach and hear whatever the Lord our God may say, and you shall speak to us everything that the Lord our God speaks to you, and we will hear and we will do.' |
| 28 And the Lord heard the sound of your words as you were speaking to me, and the Lord said to me, 'I have heard the sound of the words of this people, which they have spoken to you; everything they have spoken is right. 29 Who will give that their heart should be like this in them, so as to fear me and to keep my commandments all the days, so that it may be well with them and with their sons forever? 30 Go, say to them: "Return to your houses." 31 But as for you, stand here with me, and I will speak to you the commandments and the statutes and the judgments, which you shall teach them, and let them do them in the land which I am giving them as an inheritance.' |
| 32 And you shall be careful to do just as the Lord your God commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right or to the left 33 according to all the way which the Lord your God commanded you to walk in it, so that he may give you rest, and it may be well with you, and you may prolong your days upon the land which you shall inherit. |
