The Salutation to the Romans
1Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, a called apostle, having been set apart for the gospel of God— 2which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures— 3concerning His Son, who was born from the seed of David according to the flesh, 4who was designated Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.
5Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for the obedience of faith among all the nations for the sake of His name, 6among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ. 7To all those in Rome who are beloved of God, called saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul’s Desire to Visit Rome
8First, I give thanks to my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world. 9For God is my witness, whom I serve in my spirit in the gospel of His Son, how unceasingly I make mention of you, 10always petitioning in my prayers if somehow, at last, I might succeed by the will of God in coming to you. 11For I long to see you, so that I may share some spiritual gift with you for the purpose of strengthening you— 12that is, that we may be mutually encouraged among you through each other’s faith, both yours and mine.
13I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that many times I intended to come to you—though I have been prevented until now—so that I might have some fruit among you as well, just as I have among the rest of the nations. 14To both Greeks and Barbarians, to both the wise and the foolish, I am a debtor; 15so, for my part, I am eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome.
The Theme of the Gospel
16  Οὐ γὰρ ἐπαισχύνομαι τὸ εὐαγγέλιον, δύναμις γὰρ θεοῦ ἐστιν εἰς σωτηρίαν παντὶ τῷ πιστεύοντι, Ἰουδαίῳ τε πρῶτον καὶ Ἕλληνι. 17  δικαιοσύνη γὰρ θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ ἀποκαλύπτεται ἐκ πίστεως εἰς πίστιν, καθὼς γέγραπται, Ὁ δὲ δίκαιος ἐκ πίστεως ζήσεται. {Hab. 2:4}
16For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: “But the righteous one shall live by faith.” {Hab. 2:4}
The Revelation of God’s Wrath
18For the wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19because what can be known about God is evident among them; for God has made it evident to them. 20For since the creation of the world, His invisible attributes—both His eternal power and divine nature—are clearly seen, being understood through the things that have been made, so that they are without excuse. 21For although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their reasonings, and their senseless hearts were darkened. 22Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23and they exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the likeness of corruptible man and birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.
The Consequences of Idolatry
24Therefore, God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among themselves. 25For they exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and they worshiped and served the creation rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever, amen. 26For this reason, God gave them over to degrading passions; for even their females exchanged the natural use for that which is against nature, 27and likewise the males, having abandoned the natural use of the female, were consumed by their intense craving for one another—males committing shameless acts with males and receiving in themselves the penalty that was necessary for their error.
28And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do things that are not proper, 29being filled with every kind of unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, and malice; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and craftiness; they are gossips, 30slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31senseless, faithless, heartless, and merciless. 32Although they know the righteous decree of God—that those who practice such things are worthy of death—they not only do them, but they also give hearty approval to those who practice them.
