Chapter 4
The Parable of the Sower
1And again He began to teach beside the sea. And such a very great crowd gathered to Him that He got into a boat and sat in it on the sea, and the whole crowd was by the sea on the land. 2And He was teaching them many things in parables, and He said to them in His teaching: 3"Listen! Behold, the sower went out to sow. 4And it happened as he sowed, some seed fell beside the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5Other seed fell on the rocky ground where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth. 6And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and because it had no root, it withered away. 7Other seed fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no fruit. 8And other seeds fell into the good soil and yielded fruit, coming up and increasing, and it bore—one thirty, one sixty, and one a hundredfold.” 9And He said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”
The Purpose of Parables and the Explanation
10And when He was alone, those around Him with the Twelve began asking Him about the parables. 11And He was saying to them, “To you the mystery of the kingdom of God has been given, but to those on the outside, everything comes in parables, 12so that
  ‘seeing they may see and not perceive,
and hearing they may hear and not understand,
lest they should turn back and be forgiven
.’” {Isaiah 6:9-10}
13And He says to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? 14The sower sows the word. 15These are the ones beside the path where the word is sown: whenever they hear, immediately Satan comes and takes away the word that has been sown in them. 16And these likewise are the ones sown on the rocky ground: who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy; 17yet they have no root in themselves but are temporary. Then, when trouble or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they fall away. 18And others are the ones sown among the thorns: these are the ones who have heard the word, 19but the anxieties of this age and the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 20And those are the ones sown on the good soil: who hear the word and welcome it and bear fruit—thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold.”
The Parable of the Lamp and the Measure
21And He was saying to them, “Does a lamp come in so that it may be put under a basket or under a bed? Is it not so that it may be put on the lampstand? 22For nothing is hidden except that it should be made manifest, nor has anything become secret but that it should come to light. 23If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!”
24And He was saying to them, “Take heed to what you hear. By the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and more will be added to you. 25For to the one who has, more will be given; and from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.”
The Parable of the Growing Seed
26And He was saying, “The kingdom of God is like this: as if a man should cast seed upon the earth, 27and he sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows long, though he himself does not know how. 28By itself the earth bears fruit: first the blade, then the head, then the full grain in the head. 29But whenever the fruit permits, immediately he sends forth the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
The Parable of the Mustard Seed
30And He was saying, “How shall we liken the kingdom of God, or in what parable shall we present it? 31It is like a mustard seed, which, when it is sown upon the earth, being the smallest of all the seeds upon the earth— 32yet when it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all the garden plants and produces great branches, so that the birds of heaven are able to nest under its shade.”
Jesus’ Use of Parables
33And with many such parables He was speaking the word to them, just as they were able to hear it. 34Indeed, He was not speaking to them without a parable, but privately He would explain everything to His own disciples.
Stilling the Storm
35  Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ὀψίας γενομένης, Διέλθωμεν εἰς τὸ πέραν. 36  καὶ ἀφέντες τὸν ὄχλον παραλαμβάνουσιν αὐτὸν ὡς ἦν ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ, καὶ ἄλλα πλοῖα ἦν μετ' αὐτοῦ. 37  καὶ γίνεται λαῖλαψ μεγάλη ἀνέμου καὶ τὰ κύματα ἐπέβαλλεν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον, ὥστε ἤδη γεμίζεσθαι τὸ πλοῖον. 38  καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν ἐν τῇ πρύμνῃ ἐπὶ τὸ προσκεφάλαιον καθεύδων. καὶ ἐγείρουσιν αὐτὸν καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ, Διδάσκαλε, οὐ μέλει σοι ὅτι ἀπολλύμεθα;
35And on that day, when evening had come, He says to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36And leaving the crowd behind, they took Him along, just as He was, in the boat; and other boats were with Him. 37And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling up. 38But He Himself was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion. And they wake Him and say to Him, “Teacher, is it nothing to You that we are perishing?”
39And having been fully awakened, He rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush! Be muzzled!” And the wind died down, and a great calm occurred. 40And He said to them, “Why are you so cowardly? Do you still have no faith?” 41And they were struck with a great fear and were saying to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”
