Chapter 8
Feeding the Four Thousand
1In those days, when there was again a great crowd and they had nothing to eat, He summoned the disciples and says to them, 2"I am moved with compassion for the crowd, because they have already remained with Me three days and have nothing to eat. 3And if I dismiss them to their homes hungry, they will faint on the road; and some of them have come from far away.” 4And His disciples answered Him, “From where will anyone be able to satisfy these people with bread here in a wilderness?” 5And He was asking them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.”
6And He commands the crowd to recline on the ground. And taking the seven loaves, after giving thanks, He broke them and kept giving them to His disciples to set before them; and they set them before the crowd. 7They also had a few small fish; and after blessing them, He told them to set these before them as well. 8And they ate and were satisfied, and they picked up seven large baskets of leftover fragments. 9Now there were about four thousand. And He dismissed them. 10And immediately, after getting into the boat with His disciples, He went to the region of Dalmanutha.
The Demand for a Sign
11And the Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, testing Him. 12And groaning deeply in His spirit, He says, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation.” 13And leaving them, He got into the boat again and went away to the other side.
The Leaven of the Pharisees and Herod
14Now they had forgotten to take bread, and they did not have more than one loaf with them in the boat. 15And He was giving them strict orders, saying, “Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod!” 16And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread.
17 καὶ γνοὺς λέγει αὐτοῖς, Τί διαλογίζεσθε ὅτι ἄρτους οὐκ ἔχετε; οὔπω νοεῖτε οὐδὲ συνίετε; πεπωρωμένην ἔχετε τὴν καρδίαν ὑμῶν; 18 ὀφθαλμοὺς ἔχοντες οὐ βλέπετε καὶ ὦτα ἔχοντες οὐκ ἀκούετε; καὶ οὐ μνημονεύετε, 19 ὅτε τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους ἔκλασα εἰς τοὺς πεντακισχιλίους, πόσους κοφίνους κλασμάτων πλήρεις ἤρατε; λέγουσιν αὐτῷ, Δώδεκα. 20 Ὅτε τοὺς ἑπτὰ εἰς τοὺς τετρακισχιλίους, πόσων σπυρίδων πληρώματα κλασμάτων ἤρατε; καὶ λέγουσιν [αὐτῷ], Ἑπτά. 21 καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς, Οὔπω συνίετε;
17And knowing this, He says to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Do you have your heart hardened? 18Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember? 19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you pick up?” They say to Him, “Twelve.” 20"When the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of fragments did you pick up?” And they say to Him, “Seven.” 21And He was saying to them, “Do you not yet understand?”
The Two-Stage Healing at Bethsaida
22And they come to Bethsaida. And they bring a blind man to Him and beg Him to touch him. 23And taking the hand of the blind man, He led him out of the village, and after spitting into his eyes and laying His hands on him, He was asking him, “Do you see anything?” 24And looking up, he was saying, “I see people, because I see them like trees walking around.” 25Then He laid His hands on his eyes again, and he looked intently and was restored, and began to see everything clearly. 26And He sent him to his home, saying, “Do not even enter the village.”
Peter’s Confession
27And Jesus and His disciples went out to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He was questioning His disciples, saying to them, “Who do people say that I am?” 28And they spoke to Him, saying, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but others, one of the prophets.” 29And He began questioning them, “But you—who do you say that I am?” Answering Him, Peter says, “You are the Christ.” 30And He strictly warned them that they should tell no one about Him.
The First Prediction of the Passion
31And He began to teach them that it is necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things, and to be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and to be killed, and after three days to rise again. 32And He was speaking this word quite openly. And Peter, taking Him aside, began to rebuke Him. 33But He, turning around and seeing His disciples, rebuked Peter and says, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of men.”
The Cost of Discipleship
34And having summoned the crowd along with His disciples, He said to them, “If anyone wants to follow after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. 35For whoever wants to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake and the Gospel’s will save it. 36For what does it benefit a person to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? 37For what would a person give in exchange for his soul? 38For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
