Chapter 9
Birth and Reign of the Prince of Peace
1 And he who is in anguish shall not be at a loss until a certain time. Do this first, do it quickly, O land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, and the rest who inhabit the seacoast and beyond the Jordan—Galilee of the nations, the regions of Judea.
2 O people walking in darkness, see a great light; you who dwell in the land and shadow of death, a light shall shine upon you. 3 The majority of the people, whom You brought down in Your joy, they shall also rejoice before You as those who rejoice in the harvest, and in the manner of those who divide spoils. 4 For the yoke that lay upon them has been taken away, and the rod that was upon their neck; for the Lord has scattered the rod of the taskmasters as in the day of Midian. 5 For they shall repay every garment collected by deceit, and clothing [gained] through exchange, and they shall wish they had been burned by fire.
The Child of Great Counsel
6 For a child is born to us, a son is given to us, whose government (archē) is upon his shoulder, and his name is called Angel of Great Counsel (megalēs boulēs angelos); for I will bring peace upon the rulers, peace and health to him. 7 Great is his government, and of his peace there is no bound upon the throne of David and his kingdom, to set it right and to support it in righteousness and in judgment, from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of Hosts shall perform these things.
The Pride and Punishment of Ephraim
8 The Lord sent death upon Jacob, and it came upon Israel. 9 And all the people of Ephraim and those who dwell in Samaria shall know, through their arrogance (hybrei) and high heart, saying: 10 "The bricks have fallen, but come, let us hew stones; and let us cut down sycamores and cedars, and build ourselves a tower." 11 And God shall dash down those who rise up against Mount Zion and shall scatter their enemies: 12 Syria from the rising sun and the Greeks from the setting sun, who devour Israel with their whole mouth. For all these things His anger is not turned away, but His hand is still raised high.
13 And the people did not turn back until they were struck, and they did not seek out the Lord. 14 So the Lord took away from Israel head and tail, great and small, in a single day—15 the elder and those who respect persons, this is the head; and the prophet teaching lawless things, this is the tail. 16 And those who call this people blessed shall be leaders who lead astray, and they lead them astray so as to swallow them up. 17 Therefore the Lord shall not rejoice over their young men, and He shall not have mercy on their orphans and their widows; for all are lawless and evil, and every mouth speaks unrighteous things. For all these things His anger is not turned away, but His hand is still raised high.
The Fire of Lawlessness
18 And lawlessness shall burn like fire, and like dry grass it shall be devoured by fire; and it shall burn in the thickets of the forest, and shall consume everything round about the hills. 19 Because of the wrath of the anger of the Lord the whole land is burned up, and the people shall be as those consumed by fire; a man shall not have mercy on his brother. 20 But he shall turn to the right, for he shall be hungry, and he shall eat from the left, and a man shall not be satisfied eating the flesh of his own arm. 21 For Manasseh shall eat of Ephraim, and Ephraim of Manasseh, for together they shall besiege Judah. For all these things His anger is not turned away, but His hand is still raised high.
