Chapter 29
The Siege of Ariel and the Illusion of Nations
1 Woe to the city of Ariel, which David fought against! Gather the produce year after year, for you shall eat with Moab. 2 For I will bring distress upon Ariel, and her strength and her wealth shall be mine. 3 And I will surround you like David, and I will cast a rampart around you and set up towers about you. 4 And your words shall be humbled to the earth, and your words shall sink into the ground; and your voice shall be like those speaking out of the earth, and your voice shall grow weak toward the floor.
5 And the wealth of the ungodly shall be like dust from a wheel, and like flying chaff; and it shall be like a sudden moment 6 from the Lord of Hosts. For there shall be a visitation with thunder and earthquake and a great voice, a rushing storm and a consuming flame of fire. 7 And the wealth of all the nations, as many as campaigned against Ariel, and all those who campaigned against Jerusalem and all who are gathered against her and distressing her, shall be like one dreaming in sleep. 8 And they shall be like those eating and drinking in sleep, and when they have arisen, their dream is vain; and just as the thirsty man dreams he is drinking and having arisen is still thirsty, and his soul hoped in vain, so shall be the wealth of all the nations, as many as campaigned against Mount Zion.
The Sealed Book and Human Traditions
9 Faint and be amazed, and reel from a hangover—not from strong drink nor from wine. 10 For the Lord has made you drink a spirit of stupor (katanyxeōs), and He will close their eyes—the eyes of their prophets and of their rulers, who see hidden things. 11 And all these words shall be to you like the words of this sealed book; if they give it to a man who knows letters, saying, "Read these," he will say, "I cannot read it, for it is sealed." 12 And this book shall be given into the hands of a man who does not know letters, and one will say to him, "Read this," and he will say, "I do not know letters."
15 οὐαὶ οἱ βαθέως βουλὴν ποιοῦντες καὶ οὐ διὰ κυρίου· οὐαὶ οἱ ἐν κρυφῇ βουλὴν ποιοῦντες καὶ ἔσται ἐν σκότει τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν καὶ ἐροῦσιν τίς ἡμᾶς ἑώρακεν καὶ τίς ἡμᾶς γνώσεται ἢ ἃ ἡμεῖς ποιοῦμεν; 16 οὐχ ὡς ὁ πηλὸς τοῦ κεραμέως λογισθήσεσθε; μὴ ἐρεῖ τὸ πλάσμα τῷ πλάσαντι οὐ σύ με ἔπλασας; ἢ τὸ ποίημα τῷ ποιήσαντι οὐ συνετῶς με ἐποίησας; 13 And the Lord said: "This people draws near to me with their lips, they honor me, but their heart is far away from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching the commandments and doctrines of men." 14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to displace (metatheinai) this people, and I will displace them; and I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the understanding of the prudent I will hide. 15 Woe to those who make counsel in the depths and not through the Lord! Woe to those who make counsel in secret, and their works shall be in darkness, and they will say, "Who has seen us?" or "Who will know us or what we are doing?" 16 Shall you not be accounted as the potter's clay? Shall the thing formed say to the one who formed it, "You did not form me"? Or the work to its maker, "You did not make me with understanding"?
The Transformation of the Humble
17 Is it not yet a little while and Lebanon shall be transformed like Mount Carmel, and Mount Carmel shall be accounted as a forest? 18 And in that day the deaf shall hear the words of a book, and the eyes of the blind, who are in darkness and in mist, shall see. 19 And the poor shall exult because of the Lord in gladness, and the hopeless among men shall be filled with gladness. 20 The lawless one has failed, and the proud one has perished, and those acting lawlessly with malice have been utterly destroyed— 21 even those who make men sin by a word; and they set a stumbling block for all those who reprove in the gates, and they turned aside the righteous with injustices.
22 Therefore, thus says the Lord concerning the house of Jacob, whom He set apart from Abraham: "Jacob shall not now be ashamed, nor shall Israel now change his countenance. 23 But when their children see my works, because of me they shall sanctify my name, and they shall sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and they shall fear the God of Israel. 24 And those wandering in spirit shall know understanding, and those who grumble shall learn to obey, and the stammering tongues shall learn to speak peace."
