Chapter 3
Healing a Withered Hand on the Sabbath
1And He entered again into a synagogue, and a man was there having a withered hand. 2And they were watching Him closely to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might bring a charge against Him. 3And He says to the man who had the withered hand, “Rise up and come into the center.” 4Then He says to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save a life or to kill?” But they remained silent.
5And after looking around at them with anger, deeply grieved at the hardness of their hearts, He says to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6And immediately the Pharisees went out and began giving counsel with the Herodians against Him, as to how they might destroy Him.
The Great Multitude by the Sea
7And Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed; and from Judea 8and from Jerusalem and from Idumea and beyond the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon—a great multitude, hearing all that He was doing, came to Him. 9And He spoke to His disciples so that a small boat might be ready for Him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush Him.
10For He had healed many, with the result that all who had scourges were falling upon Him in order to touch Him. 11And the unclean spirits, whenever they beheld Him, would fall down before Him and cry out, saying, “You are the Son of God!” 12And He strictly warned them many times that they should not make Him known.
The Appointment of the Twelve
13And He went up onto the mountain and summoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they went to Him. 14And He appointed twelve—whom He also named apostles—so that they might be with Him, and so that He might send them out to preach 15and to have authority to drive out demons. 16So He appointed the twelve: Simon, to whom He gave the name Peter; 17and James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, to whom He gave the name Boanerges (which means “Sons of Thunder”); 18and Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananaean, 19and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.
The Beelzebul Controversy
20Then He went into a house, and once again the crowd gathered, so that they were not even able to eat a meal. 21And when His own people heard about this, they went out to seize Him, for they were saying, “He is out of His mind.” 22And the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “He drives out demons by the ruler of demons.”
23And having called them to Himself, He spoke to them in parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan? 24If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand but is finished. 27But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods unless he first binds the strong man; then he will plunder his house.”
28"Truly I tell you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter; 29but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin.” 30He said this because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”
Jesus’ True Family
31Then His mother and His brothers arrived, and standing outside, they sent word to Him, calling for Him. 32A crowd was sitting around Him, and they said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are outside looking for You.” 33And answering them, He said, “Who are My mother and My brothers?” 34And looking around at those sitting in a circle about Him, He said, “See, here are My mother and My brothers. 35For whoever does the will of God, this person is My brother and sister and mother.”
