Chapter 24
The Prosecution of Tertullus
1After five days, the high priest Ananias came down with some elders and a certain attorney named Tertullus, and they presented their formal charges against Paul to the Governor. 2When Paul had been summoned, Tertullus began the accusation, saying: “Since we enjoy great peace through you, and reforms are being brought to this nation through your foresight, 3we acknowledge this in every way and everywhere, most excellent Felix, with all thankfulness. 4But so that I do not weary you further, I beg you to hear us briefly with your customary kindness. 5For we have found this man to be a pestilence—a creator of insurrections among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes. 6He even tried to desecrate the temple, so we seized him. [[And we wanted to judge him according to our own law, 7but the commander Lysias came and with great violence took him out of our hands, 8ordering his accusers to come before you.]] By examining him yourself, you will be able to learn the truth of all these things of which we accuse him.” 9The Jews also joined in the attack, asserting that these things were so.
Paul’s Defense Before Felix
10When the Governor nodded for him to speak, Paul replied: “Knowing that for many years you have been a judge over this nation, I cheerfully make my defense. 11You can verify that it has not been more than twelve days since I went up to worship in Jerusalem. 12Neither in the temple did they find me disputing with anyone or stirring up a crowd, nor in the synagogues, nor throughout the city. 13Nor can they prove to you the things of which they now accuse me. 14But I confess this to you: that according to ‘The Way’ (which they call a sect), I worship the God of my fathers, believing everything laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets. 15I have the same hope in God that these men themselves await—that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous. 16In view of this, I also strive to have a clear conscience toward God and toward men at all times.
17Now after several years, I came to bring alms to my nation and to present offerings. 18While I was doing this, they found me purified in the temple, without a crowd or an uproar. 19But there are some Jews from the province of Asia—who ought to be here before you to bring charges if they have anything against me. 20Or let these men themselves say what crime they found when I stood before the Sanhedrin, 21except for this one outcry I made while standing among them: ‘It is concerning the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial before you today!’”
The Procrastination of Felix
22But Felix, having a rather accurate knowledge of ‘The Way,’ adjourned the proceedings, saying, “When Lysias the commander comes down, I will decide your case.” 23He gave orders to the centurion that Paul be kept in custody but have some liberty, and that none of his own people be prevented from attending to his needs.
24After some days, Felix arrived with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish. He sent for Paul and listened to him speak about faith in Christ Jesus. 25But as Paul was discussing righteousness, self-control, and the coming judgment, Felix became terrified and replied, “For the present, go your way; when I find a convenient time, I will summon you.” 26At the same time, he was hoping that money would be given to him by Paul; for this reason, he sent for him quite often and conversed with him.
