Alexandrus & VaticanusSinaiticus
1 The book of the words of Tōbit, son of Tobiēl, the son of Ananiēl, the son of Adouēl, the son of Gabaēl, of the descendants of Asiēl, of the tribe of Nephthali; The book of the words of Tōbith son of Tobiēl son of Ananiēl son of Adouēl son of Gabaēl son of Raphaēl son of Ragouēl of the descendants of Asiēl, of the tribe of Nephthaleim,
2 Who in the days of Enemessar king of the Assyrians was led captive out of Thisbē, which is at the right hand of Kydiōs of Nephthali in Galilee above Asēr. who in the days of Enemessar, the king of the Assyrians, was taken into captivity from Thisbē which is to the right of Kydiōs Nephthaleim in Upper Galilee, above Assēr to the west, left of Phogōr.
4 And when I was in my own country, in the land of Israēl being but young, all the tribe of Nephthali my father fell from the house of Jerusalem, which was chosen out of all the tribes of Israēl, that all the tribes should sacrifice there, where the temple of the habitation of the most High was consecrated and built for all ages. And when I was in my own country, in the land of Israēl, and when I was young, all the tribe of Nephthaleim my ancestor withdrew from the house of Dauid my ancestor and from Jerousalem, the city chosen from all the tribes of Israēl to offer sacrifice for all the tribes of Israēl, and the shrine of God’s covert had been consecrated and established in it for all the generations of the age.
5 Now all the tribes which together revolted, and the house of my father Nephthali, sacrificed unto the heifer Baal. All my kindred and the house of Nephthaleim my ancestor sacrificed to the calf which Ierobeam, the king of Israēl, had made in Dan on all the mountains of Galilee.
6 But I alone went often to Jerusalem at the feasts, as it was ordained unto all the people of Israēl by an everlasting decree, having the first fruits and tenths of increase, with that which was first shorn; and them gave I at the altar to the priests the children of Aaron. But I all alone went frequently into Hierosolyma for the feasts, as it is written in all Israēl in an everlasting ordinance. Taking the first fruits and the first products and the tithes of the cattle and the first shearings of the sheep, I would hurry off to Hierosolyma.
7 The first tenth part of all increase I gave to the sons of Aaron, who ministered at Jerusalem: another tenth part I sold away, and went, and spent it every year at Jerusalem: And I gave these to the priests, the sons of Aaron, at the altar, and the tenth of the grain and the wine and olive oil and pomegranates and the figs and the rest of the fruits to the sons of Levi who ministered in Jerousalem. Also I tithed the second tenth in silver for six years and would go and spend these things in Jerousalem each year.
8 And the third I gave unto them to whom it was meet, as Debora my father’s mother had commanded me, because I was left an orphan by my father. And I gave these things to the orphans and the widows and guests who had attached themselves to the sons of Israēl. I brought and gave these things to them in the third year, and we would eat them according to the decree that had been decreed concerning them in the law of Mōyses and according to the commands which Debbora, the mother of Ananiēl our father, had commanded, for my father had left me an orphan and died.
9 Furthermore, when I was come to the age of a man, I married Anna of my own kindred, and of her I fathered Tōbias. And when I became a man, I took a wife, one of our own family, and by her I became the father of a son, and I called his name Tōbias.
10 And when we were carried away captives to Nineve, all my brothers and those that were of my kindred ate of the food of the Gentiles. After I was taken captive to the Assyrians and when I was taken captive, I went into Nineve. And all of my kindred and my race ate the food of the nations,
12 Because I remembered God with all my heart. And when I was mindful of my God with my whole soul,
14 And I went into Mēdia, and left in trust with Gabaēl, the brother of Gabrias, at Rhaga a city of Mēdia ten talents of silver. So I would go into Mēdia and buy for him there until he died. And I placed in trust bags of silver, ten talents worth, with Gabaēl the brother of Gabri in the country of Mēdia.
18 And if the king Sennachereim had slain any, when he was come, and fled from Judea, I buried them privily; for in his wrath he killed many; but the bodies were not found, when they were sought for of the king. And if Sennachereim killed anyone, when he came fleeing from Judea in the days of judgment which the king of heaven executed upon him because of the blasphemies which he blasphemed, I buried him. For in his anger he killed many of the sons of Israēl, but I would steal their bodies and bury them. And Sennachereim sought them, but he could not find them.
19 And when one of the Ninevites went and complained of me to the king, that I buried them, and hid myself; understanding that I was sought for to be put to death, I withdrew myself for fear. Then a certain one of the people of Nineve went and informed the king about me, that I bury them; so I hid myself. But when I discovered that the king knew about me and that I was being sought out to be put to death, I was afraid and ran away.
20 Then all my goods were forcibly taken away, neither was there any thing left me, beside my wife Anna and my son Tōbias. Then everything that belonged to me was seized, and nothing was left to me that was not taken into the royal treasury, except Hanna my wife and Tōbias my son.
21 And there passed not fifty days, before two of his sons killed him, and they fled into the mountains of Ararat; and Sacherdonos his son reigned in his stead; who appointed over his father’s accounts, and over all his affairs, Achicharos my brother Anaēl’s son. But forty days did not pass before two of his sons killed him, and they fled into the mountains of Ararat. Then Sacherdonos his son became king after him. And he appointed Achicharos son of Anaēl my brother over all the accounts of his kingdom, and he had authority over all the administration.
22 And Achicharos intreating for me, I returned to Nineve. Now Achicharos was cupbearer, and keeper of the signet, and steward, and overseer of the accounts: and Sacherdonos appointed him next unto him: and he was my brother’s son. Then Achicharos interceded for me, and I returned into Nineve. For Achicharos was chief cupbearer and keeper of the signet and in charge of administration and accounts under Sennachereim, the king of the Assyrians, and Sacherdonos appointed him second to himself. Now he was my nephew and from my kinsfolk.
