Chapter 18
Life and Work in Corinth
1After these things, Paul departed from Athens and came to Corinth. 2There he found a certain Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to depart from Rome. He went to see them, 3and because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and they worked together—for they were tentmakers by trade. 4Every Sabbath he would reason in the synagogue, trying to persuade both Jews and Greeks.
The Turn to the Gentiles
5When Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul was wholly occupied with the word, solemnly testifying to the Jews that Jesus is the Messiah. 6But when they resisted and began blaspheming, he shook out his garments and said to them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am clean. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.” 7So he moved from there and went into the house of a man named Titius Justus, a worshiper of God, whose house was right next door to the synagogue.
8Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, believed in the Lord along with his whole household; and many of the Corinthians, as they listened, believed and were baptized. 9And the Lord said to Paul in a vision by night, “Do not be afraid, but keep on speaking and do not be silent, 10for I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you to harm you, because I have many people in this city.” 11So he settled there for a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.
Trial Before Gallio
12But while Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews rose up with one accord against Paul and brought him before the judgment seat, 13saying, “This man is persuading people to worship God in ways contrary to the law.” 14But just as Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, “If it were a matter of some crime or a wicked felony, O Jews, it would be reasonable for me to put up with you; 15but if it is a question of words and names and your own law, see to it yourselves. I do not wish to be a judge of these things.” 16And he drove them away from the judgment seat. 17Then they all seized Sosthenes, the leader of the synagogue, and began beating him in front of the judgment seat. But Gallio paid no attention to any of these things.
Journey Back to Antioch
18Paul, having stayed many days longer, said farewell to the brothers and sailed away for Syria, and with him were Priscilla and Aquila. At Cenchreae he had his hair cut, for he was under a vow. 19They arrived at Ephesus, and he left them there; but he himself entered the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. 20When they asked him to stay for a longer time, he did not consent, 21but saying farewell and adding, “I will return to you again, God willing,” he set sail from Ephesus. 22When he had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church, and then went down to Antioch.
Paul Begins the Third Journey
23After spending some time there, he departed and traveled through the region of Galatia and Phrygia in orderly sequence, strengthening all the disciples.
The Eloquent Apollos
24Now a certain Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, arrived in Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, powerful in the Scriptures. 25This man had been instructed in the Way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he began speaking and teaching accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he was acquainted only with the baptism of John. 26He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the Way of God to him more accurately.
27And when he wanted to cross over into Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he was a great help to those who had believed through grace; 28for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, demonstrating through the Scriptures that the Messiah is Jesus.
