Chapter 17
The Transfiguration
1And after six days, Jesus took along Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up onto a high mountain by themselves. 2And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as the light. 3And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. 4Peter responded and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here! If you wish, I will make three shelters here—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
5While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased; listen to him!” 6When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. 7But Jesus approached and, touching them, said, “Get up and do not be afraid.” 8And raising their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus alone.
The Question of Elijah
9And as they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.” 10And the disciples questioned him, saying, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 11He answered and said, “Elijah indeed is coming and will restore all things; 12but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they pleased. In the same way, the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” 13Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them about John the Baptist.
Healing a Boy with a Demon
14And when they came to the crowd, a man approached Him, falling on his knees before Him 15and saying, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is a ‘moon-struck' sufferer and is in a terrible state; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16And I brought him to Your disciples, and they were not able to heal him.” 17And in response Jesus said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I put up with you? Bring him here to Me.” 18And Jesus rebuked it, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was healed from that very hour.
The Power of Mustard-Seed Faith
19Then the disciples approached Jesus privately and said, “Why were we not able to cast it out?” 20And He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith like a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. 21[[But this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting.]]”
The Second Prediction of the Passion
22While they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be handed over into the hands of men, 23and they will kill Him, and on the third day He will be raised.” And they were deeply grieved.
24When they arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the double-drachma tax approached Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the double-drachma?” 25He said, “Yes.” And when he entered the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect tolls or head-taxes? From their own sons or from strangers?” 26When he said, “From strangers,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free. 27However, so that we do not offend them, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a stater-coin. Take that and give it to them for Me and for yourself.”
