On Life and Conduct
1 The king's heart is in the hand of Yahweh, as the rivers of water: he turns it wherever he will.
21:1
ἐν

21:1 As a rush of water, so is the king's heart in God's hand: he turns it wherever he may desire to point out. | 21:1 As a rush of water, so is the king's heart in God's hand: he turns it wherever he may desire to point out. |
2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes; but Yahweh knows the hearts.
21:2 Every man seems to himself righteous; but the Lord directs the hearts. | 21:2 Every man seems to himself righteous; but the Lord directs the hearts. |
3 To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to Yahweh than sacrifice.
21:3 To do justly and to speak truth, are more pleasing to God than the blood of sacrifices. | 21:3 To do justly and to speak truth, are more pleasing to God than the blood of sacrifices. |
4 A high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.
21:4 A high-minded man is stout-hearted in his pride; and the lamp of the wicked is sin. | 21:4 A high-minded man is stout-hearted in his pride; and the lamp of the wicked is sin. |
5 The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of everyone who is hasty only to want.

21:5 N/A | 21:5 N/A |
6 The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro of those who seek death.
21:6 He who gathers treasures with a lying tongue pursues vanity on to the snares of death. | 21:6 He who gathers treasures with a lying tongue pursues vanity on to the snares of death. |
7 The robbery of the wicked shall destroy them; because they refuse to do judgment.
21:7
21:7 Destruction shall lodge with the ungodly; for they refuse to do justly. | 21:7 Destruction shall lodge with the ungodly; for they refuse to do justly. |
8 The way of man is froward and strange; but as for the pure, his work is right.
21:8
ὁ
21:8 To the froward God sends froward ways; for his works are pure and right. | 21:8 To the froward God sends froward ways; for his works are pure and right. |
9 It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.
21:9 It is better to live in a corner in the open than in plastered quarters and in a shared1 house with injustice. | 21:9 It is better to live in a corner in the open than in plastered quarters and in a shared1 house with injustice. |
10 The soul of the wicked desires evil: his neighbour finds no favour in his eyes.
21:10 The soul of the ungodly shall not be pitied by any man. | 21:10 The soul of the ungodly shall not be pitied by any man. |
11 When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise; and when the wise is instructed, he receives knowledge.
21:11 When an intemperate man is punished the simple becomes wiser; and a wise man understanding will receive knowledge. | 21:11 When an intemperate man is punished the simple becomes wiser; and a wise man understanding will receive knowledge. |
12 The righteous man wisely considers the house of the wicked; but God overthrows the wicked for their wickedness.
21:12 A righteous man understands the hearts of the ungodly; and despises the ungodly for their wickedness. | 21:12 A righteous man understands the hearts of the ungodly; and despises the ungodly for their wickedness. |
13 Whoever stops his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.
21:13 He who stops his ears from hearing the poor, shall himself also cry, and there shall be none to hear him. | 21:13 He who stops his ears from hearing the poor, shall himself also cry, and there shall be none to hear him. |
14 A gift in secret pacifies anger; and a reward in the bosom strong wrath.
21:14 A secret gift calms anger; but he who forbears to give stirs up strong wrath. | 21:14 A secret gift calms anger; but he who forbears to give stirs up strong wrath. |
15 It is joy to the just to do judgment; but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.
21:15 It is the joy of the righteous to do judgment; but a holy man is abominable with evil-doers. | 21:15 It is the joy of the righteous to do judgment; but a holy man is abominable with evil-doers. |
16 The man who wanders out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead.
21:16 A man who wanders out of the way of righteousness, shall rest in the congregation of giants. | 21:16 A man who wanders out of the way of righteousness, shall rest in the congregation of giants. |
17 He who loves pleasure shall be a poor man: he who loves wine and oil shall not be rich.
21:17 A poor man loves mirth, loving wine and oil in abundance; | 21:17 A poor man loves mirth, loving wine and oil in abundance; |
18 The wicked shall be a ransom for the righteous, and the transgressor for the upright.
21:18 and a transgressor is the abomination of a righteous man. | 21:18 and a transgressor is the abomination of a righteous man. |
19 It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman.
21:19 It is better to dwell in a wilderness than with a quarrelsome and talkative and short-tempered woman. | 21:19 It is better to dwell in a wilderness than with a quarrelsome and talkative and short-tempered woman. |
20 There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spends it up.
21:20 A desirable treasure will rest on the mouth of the wise; but foolish men will swallow it up. | 21:20 A desirable treasure will rest on the mouth of the wise; but foolish men will swallow it up. |
21 He who follows after righteousness and mercy finds life, righteousness, and honour.
21:21 The way of righteousness and mercy will find life and glory. | 21:21 The way of righteousness and mercy will find life and glory. |
22 A wise man scales the city of the mighty, and casts down the strength of the confidence of it.
21:22 A wise man assaults strong cities, and demolishes the fortress in which the ungodly trusted. | 21:22 A wise man assaults strong cities, and demolishes the fortress in which the ungodly trusted. |
23 Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles.
21:23 He who keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from trouble. | 21:23 He who keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from trouble. |
24 Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who deals in proud wrath.
21:24
καὶ
καὶ
21:24 A bold and self-willed and insolent man is called a pest; and he who remembers injuries is a transgressor. | 21:24 A bold and self-willed and insolent man is called a pest; and he who remembers injuries is a transgressor. |
25 The desire of the slothful kills him; for his hands refuse to labour.
21:25
21:25 Desires kill the sluggard; for his hands don't choose to do anything. | 21:25 Desires kill the sluggard; for his hands don't choose to do anything. |
26 He covets greedily all the day long; but the righteous gives and doesn't spare.
21:26 An ungodly man entertains evil desires all the day; but the righteous is unsparingly merciful and compassionate. | 21:26 An ungodly man entertains evil desires all the day; but the righteous is unsparingly merciful and compassionate. |
27 The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he brings it with a wicked mind?
21:27 The sacrifices of the ungodly are abomination to the Lord, for they offer them wickedly. | 21:27 The sacrifices of the ungodly are abomination to the Lord, for they offer them wickedly. |
28 A false witness shall perish; but the man who hears speaks constantly.
21:28 A false witness shall perish; but an obedient man will speak cautiously. | 21:28 A false witness shall perish; but an obedient man will speak cautiously. |
29 A wicked man hardens his face; but as for the upright, he directs his way.
21:29 An ungodly man impudently withstands with his face; but the upright man himself understands his ways. | 21:29 An ungodly man impudently withstands with his face; but the upright man himself understands his ways. |
30 There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against Yahweh.
21:30 There is no wisdom, there is no courage, there is no counsel against the ungodly. | 21:30 There is no wisdom, there is no courage, there is no counsel against the ungodly. |
31 The horse is prepared against the day of battle; but safety is of Yahweh.
