Chapter 2
The Healing of the Paralytic
1And when he entered again into Capernaum after some days, it was heard that he was at home. 2And so many were gathered together that there was no longer any room, not even near the door, and he was speaking the word to them. 3And they come bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four men. 4And being unable to bring him near to him because of the crowd, they removed the roofing where he was, and having dug through, they lowered the mat on which the paralytic was lying.
5And seeing their faith, Jesus says to the paralytic, “Child, your sins are forgiven.” 6Now some of the scribes were sitting there and debating in their hearts: 7"Why does this man speak this way? He is blaspheming! Who is able to forgive sins except God alone?” 8And immediately, Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they were debating this way within themselves, says to them, “Why are you debating these things in your hearts? 9Which is easier: to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take up your mat and walk’? 10But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he says to the paralytic— 11"I say to you, get up, take up your mat, and go to your home.” 12And he got up and immediately, having taken up the mat, he went out in the sight of everyone, so that they were all astonished and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”
Teaching by the Sea
13And he went out again beside the sea; and all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them.
The Calling of Levi and the Feast with Sinners
14And as he was passing by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office, and he says to him, “Follow me.” And he stood up and followed him. 15And it happened that while he was reclining at the table in his house, many tax collectors and “sinners” were reclining with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following him. 16And when the scribes of the Pharisees saw that he was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they began saying to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17And hearing this, Jesus says to them, “The healthy have no need of a physician, but rather those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
The Question of Fasting
18Now the disciples of John and the Pharisees were fasting. And they come and say to him, “Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” 19And Jesus said to them, “The wedding guests cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, can they? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. 20But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.”
21"No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise, the patch pulls away from it—the new from the old—and a worse tear occurs. 22And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost along with the skins. Instead, new wine is for new wineskins.”
Lord of the Sabbath
23And it happened that on the Sabbath he was passing through the grainfields, and his disciples began to make their way while plucking the heads of grain. 24And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look! Why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 25And he says to them, “Have you never read what David did when he had need and became hungry, he and those with him? 26How he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest and ate the ‘Bread of the Presence'—which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests—and he also gave it to those who were with him?” 27And he was saying to them, “The Sabbath was made for the sake of man, and not man for the sake of the Sabbath. 28So then, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
