The Crisis of the Two Smoldering Stumps
1 And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz, son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin, king of Aram, and Pekah, son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but they were not able to besiege it. 2 And it was reported to the house of David, saying, "Aram has conspired with Ephraim." And his soul and the soul of his people were shaken, just as a tree in a thicket is shaken by the wind.
5 καὶ υἱὸς τοῦ Ἀρὰμ καὶ υἱὸς τοῦ Ῥομελίου, ὅτι ἐβουλεύσαντο βουλὴν πονηρὰν περὶ σου λέγοντες 6 ἀναβησόμεθα εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν καὶ συλλαλήσαντες αὐτοῖς ἀποστρέψομεν αὐτοὺς πρὸς ἡμᾶς καὶ βασιλεύσομεν αὐτῆς τὸν υἱὸν Ταβεήλ, 3 And the Lord said to Isaiah, "Go out to meet Ahaz, you and Jasoub (Shear-jashub) your son who was left behind, at the pool of the upper road of the Fuller’s Field. 4 And you shall say to him: 'Take care to be quiet, and do not fear; neither let your soul be weak because of these two smoldering stumps of wood; for when the anger of my wrath occurs, I will heal again.' 5 Because the son of Aram and the son of Remaliah have plotted evil counsel against you, saying, 6 'We will go up into Judea, and having conferred with them, we will turn them to us and we will set the son of Tabeel as king over it.'"
7 Thus says the Lord of Hosts: "This counsel shall not stand, nor shall it be. 8 But the head of Aram is Damascus, and yet within sixty-five years the kingdom of Ephraim shall fail from being a people. 9 And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah; and if you do not believe, neither shall you understand."
The Sign of the Virgin and Immanuel
10 And the Lord spoke again to Ahaz, saying, 11 "Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God, in the depth or in the height." 12 And Ahaz said, "I will not ask, nor will I tempt the Lord." 13 And he said, "Hear then, O house of David: Is it a small struggle (agōna) for you to contend with men? And how do you provide a struggle for the Lord? 14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin (hē parthenos) shall be with child and shall bear a son, and you shall call his name Immanuel. 15 Butter and honey he shall eat; before he knows how to prefer evil, he will choose the good. 16 For before the child knows good or evil, he refuses wickedness to choose the good; and the land which you fear because of the two kings shall be abandoned."
The Coming Assyrian Scourge
17 "But God will bring upon you and upon your people and upon the house of your father days such as have not yet come since the day Ephraim withdrew from Judah—the king of the Assyrians." 18 And it shall be in that day that the Lord will whistle for the flies which rule over a part of the river of Egypt, and for the bee which is in the land of the Assyrians. 19 And they shall all come and rest in the ravines of the land and in the clefts of the rocks and in the caves and in every cranny and in every tree.
20 In that day the Lord will shave with a great and drunken razor, which is beyond the river of the king of the Assyrians—the head and the hair of the feet—and He will remove the beard. 21 And it shall be in that day that a man will keep a young cow and two sheep; 22 and it shall be, from the producing of so much milk, everyone left upon the land shall eat butter and honey.
23 And it shall be in that day, every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand shekels, they shall become a wasteland and thorns. 24 Men shall enter there with arrows and bows, for the whole land shall be wasteland and thorns. 25 And every mountain that used to be plowed shall be plowed no more, and no fear shall come there; for from the wasteland and thorns it shall be for the grazing of sheep and the trampling of oxen.
