Chapter 6
Practice Piety in Secret
1"Take care not to perform your righteousness in front of people in order to be put on display for them; otherwise, you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
2Therefore, whenever you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets so that they may be glorified by people. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward in full. 3But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4so that your giving may be in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.”
Prayer in the Secret Room
5"And whenever you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the wide streets so that they may be visible to people. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward in full. 6But you, whenever you pray, enter into your inner room and, having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.
7And when you pray, do not babble like the Gentiles, for they think that by their many words they will be heard. 8Therefore, do not be like them, for your Father knows what things you have need of before you even ask Him.”

9"Therefore, pray in this way: Our Father who is in heaven,
may Your name be kept holy.
14For if you forgive people their wrongdoings, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15But if you do not forgive people, neither will your Father forgive your wrongdoings.”
10May Your kingdom come. May Your will be done, as in heaven, so also on earth. 11Give us today our daily bread. 12And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13And do not lead us into a time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one. |
Fasting Without the Mask
16"Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so that they may appear to people to be fasting. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward in full. 17But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18so that your fasting is not evident to people but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father, who sees in the secret place, will reward you.”
True Wealth and Single Vision
19"Stop storing up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves dig through and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not dig through or steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
22The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
24No one is able to serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You are not able to serve God and Money.”
Do Not Be Anxious
25 Διὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν, μὴ μεριμνᾶτε τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν τί φάγητε [ἢ τί πίητε], μηδὲ τῷ σώματι ὑμῶν τί ἐνδύσησθε. οὐχὶ ἡ ψυχὴ πλεῖόν ἐστιν τῆς τροφῆς καὶ τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἐνδύματος; 26 ἐμβλέψατε εἰς τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ὅτι οὐ σπείρουσιν οὐδὲ θερίζουσιν οὐδὲ συνάγουσιν εἰς ἀποθήκας, καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὁ οὐράνιος τρέφει αὐτά· οὐχ ὑμεῖς μᾶλλον διαφέρετε αὐτῶν; 27 τίς δὲ ἐξ ὑμῶν μεριμνῶν δύναται προσθεῖναι ἐπὶ τὴν ἡλικίαν αὐτοῦ πῆχυν ἕνα;
25 “Because of this I say to you: do not be anxious for your life, what you might eat or what you might drink, nor for your body, what you might put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26Look at the birds of the air: they do not sow, nor do they reap, nor do they gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27And which of you, by being anxious, is able to add a single cubit to his life-span?
28 καὶ περὶ ἐνδύματος τί μεριμνᾶτε; καταμάθετε τὰ κρίνα τοῦ ἀγροῦ πῶς αὐξάνουσιν· οὐ κοπιῶσιν οὐδὲ νήθουσιν· 29 λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐδὲ Σολομὼν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ δόξῃ αὐτοῦ περιεβάλετο ὡς ἓν τούτων. 30 εἰ δὲ τὸν χόρτον τοῦ ἀγροῦ σήμερον ὄντα καὶ αὔριον εἰς κλίβανον βαλλόμενον ὁ θεὸς οὕτως ἀμφιέννυσιν, οὐ πολλῷ μᾶλλον ὑμᾶς, ὁλιγόπιστοι;
28And why are you anxious about clothing? Observe the lilies of the field, how they grow: they do not labor, nor do they spin. 29Yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 30But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you—you of little faith?
31Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?' or ‘What shall we drink?' or ‘What shall we wear?' 32For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
