Chapter 4
The Temptation of Jesus in the Wilderness
|
1Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil.
2And after fasting for forty days and forty nights, He was famished.
3And the tempter approached and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, speak so that these stones may become loaves of bread.”
4But He answered and said, “It is written:
'Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that proceeds through the mouth of God.’” {Deut. 8:3} |
|
5Then the devil took Him into the holy city and stood Him upon the pinnacle of the temple
6and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written:
'He will command His angels concerning You,'
and ‘on their hands they will lift You up, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’” {Psalm 90 (91):11-12} |
{Deut.
|
7Jesus said to him, “On the other hand, it is written: 'You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
{Deut. 6:16}
8Again, the devil took Him to an exceedingly high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory,
9and he said to Him, “All these things I will give to You, if You will fall down and worship me.”
10Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written:
'You shall worship the Lord your God,
and Him only shall you serve.’” {Deut. 6:13} |
| 11Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels approached and began to minister to Him. |
Jesus Begins His Ministry in Galilee
| 12Now when He heard that John had been handed over, He withdrew into Galilee. 13And leaving Nazareth, He went and settled in Capernaum by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14so that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled: |
|
15“Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
The way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, 16The people sitting in darkness Have seen a great light, And for those sitting in the region and shadow of death, A light has dawned upon them.” {Isa. 9:1-2} |
| 17From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” |
The Call of the First Disciples
| 18While walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19And He said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 21Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. 22Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed Him. |
Healing and Fame
| 23And He went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people. 24And the report about Him went out into all Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those gripped by various diseases and intense pains, the demon-possessed, the epileptics, and the paralytics; and He healed them. 25And large crowds followed Him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from beyond the Jordan. |
