Chapter 10
The Luxuriant Vine and the Divided Heart
1 Israel is a vine with goodly branches; its fruit is abundant. According to the multitude of his fruits, he multiplied the altars; according to the good things of his land, he built pillars. 2 They divided their hearts; now they shall be vanished. He Himself will tear down their altars; their pillars shall suffer misery. 3 Because now they will say: "We have no king, for we did not fear the Lord; and as for the king, what will he do for us?" 4 Speaking words—false pretenses—he will make a covenant. Judgment will spring up like weeds (agrōstis) upon the dry land of the field.
The Exile of the Calf of On
5 The inhabitants of Samaria shall dwell near the calf of the House of On; for its people mourned over it. And just as they provoked Him to bitterness, they shall rejoice over its glory, because it has been migrated away from him. 6 And having bound it, they carried it away to the Assyrians as a gift to King Jarim. Ephraim will receive [the calf] in a gift, and Israel shall be put to shame in his own counsel. 7 Samaria has cast off her king like a twig upon the surface of the water. 8 And the altars of On—the sins of Israel—shall be taken away; thorns and thistles shall grow up upon their altars. And they shall say to the mountains, "Cover us!" and to the hills, "Fall on us!"
The Unproductive Plowing and the Call to Justice
9 Since the days of the hills, Israel has sinned; there they stood. Shall not war overtake them on the hill against the children of iniquity? 10 He has come to discipline them; and peoples shall be gathered against them when they are disciplined for their two iniquities. 11 Ephraim is a heifer taught to love strife (neikos), but I will come upon the fairest part of her neck. I will mount Ephraim; I will pass over Judah in silence; Jacob shall grow strong for him.
12 Sow for yourselves unto righteousness; harvest unto the fruit of life! Enlighten yourselves with the light of knowledge; seek the Lord until the products of righteousness come to you. 13 Why did you pass over impiety in silence and harvest her iniquities? You ate false fruit! Because you hoped in your chariots, in the multitude of your power. 14 And destruction shall rise up among your people, and all your walled places shall depart. As prince Salaman [did] from the house of Jerobaal in the days of war, they dashed the mother to the ground upon the children. 15 Thus I will do to you, O house of Israel, because of the face of your wickednesses. At dawn they were cast away; the king of Israel was cast away.
