Chapter 9
Healing the Man Born Blind
1And as he was passing by, he saw a man blind from birth. 2And his disciples questioned him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, so that he was born blind?” 3Jesus answered, “Neither this man sinned nor his parents, but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4We must work the works of the One who sent me while it is day; night is coming when no one is able to work. 5Whenever I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
6Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud from the saliva and smeared the mud on his eyes 7and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated Sent). So he went away and washed, and he came back seeing.
8Then the neighbors and those who used to see him previously—for he was a beggar—were saying, “Is this not the one who used to sit and beg?” 9Some were saying, “This is he,” while others were saying, “No, but he looks like him.” He kept saying, “I am the one.” 10So they were saying to him, “How then were your eyes opened?” 11That man answered, “The man called Jesus made mud and smeared my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went away and washed, and I received my sight.” 12They said to him, “Where is that man?” He says, “I do not know.”
Interrogation by the Pharisees
13They led him—the man who had been blind—to the Pharisees. 14Now it was a Sabbath on the day Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15So the Pharisees also began asking him again how he received his sight. He said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” 16Then some of the Pharisees were saying, “This man is not from God, because he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others were saying, “How can a sinful man perform such signs?” And there was a division among them. 17So they said to the blind man again, “What do you say about him, since he opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a prophet.”
The Testimony of the Parents
18The Judeans, therefore, did not believe concerning him—that he had been blind and received his sight—until they summoned the parents of the one who received his sight 19and questioned them, saying, “Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20His parents answered and said, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind; 21but how he now sees, we do not know, or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” 22His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Judeans; for the Judeans had already agreed that if anyone should confess him to be the Christ, he would be expelled from the synagogue. 23For this reason his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”
The Second Interrogation and Expulsion
24So for a second time they summoned the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.” 25He then answered, “Whether he is a sinner, I do not know. One thing I do know: that though I was blind, now I see.” 26So they said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27He answered them, “I told you already and you did not listen; why do you want to hear it again? You don’t want to become his disciples too, do you?” 28And they reviled him and said, “You are that man’s disciple, but we are disciples of Moses! 29We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he is from.” 30The man answered and said to them, “Well, herein is the amazing thing: that you do not know where he is from, and yet he opened my eyes! 31We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He listens to this person. 32Since the beginning of time, it has never been heard of that anyone opened the eyes of someone born blind. 33If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” 34They answered and said to him, “You were born entirely in sins, and you are trying to teach us?” And they threw him out.
Spiritual Sight and Adoration
35Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and after finding him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 36That man answered and said, “And who is he, Lord, so that I may believe in him?” 37Jesus said to him, “You have both seen him, and he is the one currently speaking with you.” 38Then he declared, “I believe, Lord!” and he fell down in worship before him. 39And Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.”
The Blindness of the Seeing
40Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and said to him, “We aren’t blind too, are we?” 41Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but as it is, you say, ‘We see,’ and so your sin remains.”
