Chapter 2
The Wedding at Cana
1On the third day, a wedding took place in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2Jesus and His disciples were also invited to the wedding. 3When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” 4And Jesus said to her, “What does that have to do with me and you, woman? My hour has not yet come.” 5His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He tells you, do it.”
6Now there were six stone water jars sitting there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding two or three measures. 7Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8Then He said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it.
9When the master of the feast tasted the water that had become wine—not knowing where it came from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew—the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the inferior wine. But you have kept the good wine until now!” 11This beginning of signs Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee; He revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.
Departure to Capernaum
The Cleansing of the Temple
13  Καὶ ἐγγὺς ἦν τὸ πάσχα τῶν Ἰουδαίων, καὶ ἀνέβη εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα ὁ Ἰησοῦς. 14  καὶ εὗρεν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ τοὺς πωλοῦντας βόας καὶ πρόβατα καὶ περιστερὰς καὶ τοὺς κερματιστὰς καθημένους, 15  καὶ ποιήσας φραγέλλιον ἐκ σχοινίων πάντας ἐξέβαλεν ἐκ τοῦ ἱεροῦ τά τε πρόβατα καὶ τοὺς βόας, καὶ τῶν κολλυβιστῶν ἐξέχεεν τὸ κέρμα καὶ τὰς τραπέζας ἀνέτρεψεν, 16  καὶ τοῖς τὰς περιστερὰς πωλοῦσιν εἶπεν, Ἄρατε ταῦτα ἐντεῦθεν, μὴ ποιεῖτε τὸν οἶκον τοῦ πατρός μου οἶκον ἐμπορίου. 17  Ἐμνήσθησαν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι γεγραμμένον ἐστίν, Ὁ ζῆλος τοῦ οἴκου σου καταφάγεταί με. {Psalm 68 (69):10}
13Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14And He found in the temple courts those who were selling oxen, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers sitting there. 15So, having made a whip out of cords, He drove them all out of the temple—both the sheep and the oxen—and He poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16And to those selling the doves He said, “Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a house of trade!” 17His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.” {Psalm 68 (69):10}
18Then the Jews answered and said to Him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” 19Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20Then the Jews said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?” 21But He was speaking about the temple of His body. 22Therefore, when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
Jesus Knows the Hearts of Men
23Now while He was in Jerusalem at the Passover during the feast, many believed in His name as they observed His signs which He was performing. 24But Jesus, for His part, did not entrust Himself to them because He knew all people, 25and because He had no need for anyone to testify concerning man; for He Himself knew what was in man.
