Abram Journeys to Egypt

1 Now Yahweh had said to Abram, “Get out of your country, and from your kindred, and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you.

12:1 And the Lord said to Habram, “Go out of your land and out of your relatives, and out of your father’s home, and into the land which I will show you. 12:1 And the Lord said to Habram, “Go out of your land and out of your relatives, and out of your father’s home, and come into the land which I will show you.

2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing.

12:2 And I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you and magnify your name, and you will be blessed. 12:2 And I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you and magnify your name, and you will become blessed.

3 And I will bless those who bless you, and curse him that curses you; and in you shall all families of the earth be blessed.”

12:3 And I will bless those who bless you, and curse those who curse you, and all the tribes of the land will be blessed by you.” 12:3 And I will bless those who bless you, and curse those who curse you, and all the tribes of the land will be blessed by you.”

4 So Abram departed, as Yahweh had spoken to him; and Lot went with him; and Abram was 75 years old when he departed out of Haran.

12:4 And Habram departed as the Lord spoke to him, and Lōt went with him, and Habram was 75 years old, when he went out of Charran. 12:4 And Habram departed as the Lord spoke to him, and Lōt went with him, and Habram was 75 years old, when he went out of Charran.

5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had acquired in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.

12:5 And Habram took Sara his wife, and Lōt the son of his brother, and all their possessions, as many as they acquired, and every soul which they acquired in Charran, and they went out to go into Canaan-land, and they went into Canaan-land. 12:5 And Habram took Sara his wife, and Lōt the son of his brother, and all their possessions, as many as they acquired, and every soul which they acquired from Charran, and they went out to go into Canaan-land

6 And Abram passed through the land to the place of Sichem, to the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.

12:6 And Habram travelled through the land into its length as far as the place Sychem, to the high oak, and the Chananites then inhabited the land. 12:6 And Habram travelled through the land into its length as far as the place Sychem, to the high oak, and the Chananites then inhabited the land.

7 And Yahweh appeared to Abram, and said, “Unto your seed will I give this land”; and there built he an altar to Yahweh, who appeared to him.

12:7 And the Lord appeared to Habram, and said to him, “I will give this land to your offspring. And Habram built an altar there to the Lord who appeared to him.” 12:7 And the Lord appeared to Habram, and said to him, “I will give this land to your offspring. And Habram built an altar there to the Lord who appeared to him.”

8 And he removed from there to a mountain on the east of Bethel, and set up his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east; and there he built an altar to Yahweh, and called on the name of Yahweh.

12:8 And he departed from there to the mountain eastward of Bethēl, and there he set up his tent in Bethēl near the sea, and Aggai toward the east, and there he built an altar to the Lord, and called on the name of the Lord. 12:8 And he departed from there to the mountain eastward of Bethēl, and there he set up his tent in Bethēl near the sea, and Aggai toward the east, and there he built an altar to the Lord, and called on the name of the Lord.

9 And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.

12:9 And Habram departed and went and encamped in the wilderness. 12:9 And Habram departed and went and encamped in the wilderness.

10 And there was a famine in the land; and Abram went down into Egypt to stay there; for the famine was grievous in the land.

12:10 And there was a famine in the land, and Habram went down to Egypt to dwell as a resident alien there, because the famine prevailed in the land. 12:10 And there was a famine in the land, and Habram went down to Egypt to dwell as a resident alien there, because the famine prevailed in the land.

11 And it happened, when he came near to enter into Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, “Behold now, I know that you are a fair woman to look upon.

12:11 And it happened when Habram approached to enter into Egypt, Habram said to Sara his wife, “I know that you are a beautiful woman. 12:11 And it happened when Habram approached to enter into Egypt, Habram said to Sara his wife, “I know that you are a beautiful woman.

12 Therefore it will happen, when the Egyptians shall see you, that they shall say, ‘This is his wife; and they will kill me, but they will save you alive.’

12:12 Therefore, it will be when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife, and they will kill me, but they will keep you for themselves.’ 12:12 Therefore it will be when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife, and they will kill me, but they will keep you for themselves.’

13 Say, please, you are my sister: that it may be well with me for your sake; and my soul shall live because of you.”

12:13 Say, therefore, ‘I am his sister,’ that it may be well with me because of you, and my soul will live for your sake.” 12:13 Say, therefore, ‘I am his sister,’ that it may be well with me because of you, and my soul will live for your sake.”

14 And it happened, that, when Abram came into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very fair.

12:14 And it happened when Habram entered into Egypt – the Egyptians having seen his wife that she was very beautiful – 12:14 And it happened when Habram entered into Egypt – the Egyptians having seen his wife that she was very beautiful –

15 The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh; and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house.

12:15 The princes of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her to Pharaoh and brought her into the house of Pharaoh. 12:15 The princes of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her to Pharaoh and brought her into the house of Pharaoh.

16 And he entreated Abram well for her sake; and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels.

12:16 And they treated Habram well because of her, and he had sheep, and calves, and donkeys, and male-servants, and female-servants, and mules, and camels. 12:16 And they treated Habram well because of her, and he had sheep, and calves, and donkeys, and male-servants, and female-servants, and mules, and camels.

17 And Yahweh plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram’s wife.

12:17 And God afflicted Pharaoh and his household with great and evil afflictions, because of Sara, Habram’s wife. 12:17 And God afflicted Pharaoh and his household with great and evil afflictions, because of Sara, Habram’s wife.

18 And Pharaoh called Abram, and said, What is this that you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?

τί τοῦτο ἐποίησάς μοι, ὅτι οὐκ ἀπήγγειλάς μοι, ὅτι γυνή σου ἐστίν;
12:18 And Pharaoh having called Habram, said, “What is this you have done to me, that you did not tell me that she was your wife? 12:18 And Pharaoh having called Habram, said, “What is this you have done to me, that you did not tell me that she was your wife?

19 Why did you say, She is my sister? So I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold your wife, take her, and go your way.

12:19 ἵνα τί εἶπας ὅτι ἀδελφή μού ἐστιν;
12:19 ἱνατί εἶπας ὅτι ἀδελφή μου ἐστί;
12:19 Why did you say, She is my sister? And I took her for a wife for myself; and now, look! your wife is before you, take her and go away.” 12:19 Why did you say, She is my sister? And I took her for a wife for myself; and now, look! your wife is before you, take her and go away.”

20 And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.

12:20 And Pharaoh gave orders to men concerning Habram, to escort him and his wife, and all that he had and Lōt with him. 12:20 And Pharaoh gave orders to men concerning Habram, to escort him and his wife, and all that he had.
