Chapter 5
The Ruler from Bethlehem
The Humiliation of Israel
| 5:1 Now the daughter of Ephraim shall be completely fenced in with a fence (emphrachthēsetai); he has set a siege against us; with a rod they shall strike the tribes of Israel upon the cheek. |
The Birth of the Ruler
| 2 And you, Bethlehem, house of Ephrata, are too small to be among the thousands of Judah; out of you shall come forth to me one to be a ruler in Israel, and his goings forth are from the beginning, from the days of eternity (ex hēmerōn aiōnos). |
The Shepherd and His Flock
| 3 Therefore he will give them up until the time that she who is in labor brings forth; then the remaining ones of their brothers shall return to the sons of Israel. 4 And he shall stand and see, and he shall shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, and they shall exist in the glory of the name of the Lord their God; for now he shall be magnified to the ends of the earth. |
The Victory over Assyria
The Seven Shepherds
| 5 And this shall be peace: whenever the Assyrian comes upon your land, and whenever he steps upon your country, then seven shepherds and eight "bites" of men (dēgmata anthrōpōn) shall be raised up against him. 6 And they shall shepherd Asshur with the sword, and the land of Nimrod (Nebrōd) in her trench (taphrō); and he shall rescue from the Assyrian, whenever he comes upon your land and whenever he steps upon your borders. |
The Dual Nature of the Remnant
Dew and Lions
| 7 And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the nations in the midst of many peoples like dew falling from the Lord and like lambs upon the grass (agnōstin), so that no one may gather, nor any stand among the sons of men. 8 And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the nations in the midst of many peoples like a lion among the cattle in the forest, and like a young lion in the flocks of sheep—just as when he passes through, he discriminates (diasteilas), snatches, and there is no one who rescues. 9 Your hand shall be lifted up over those who afflict you, and all your enemies shall be utterly destroyed. |
The Purging of Israel
The Removal of False Security
| 10 Καὶ ἔσται ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ, λέγει κύριος, ἐξολεθρεύσω τοὺς ἵππους σου ἐκ μέσου σου καὶ ἀπολῶ τὰ ἅρματά σου 11 καὶ ἐξολεθρεύσω τὰς πόλεις τῆς γῆς σου καὶ ἐξαρῶ πάντα τὰ ὀχυρώματά σου· 12 καὶ ἐξαρῶ τὰ φάρμακά σου ἐκ τῶν χειρῶν σου, καὶ ἀποφθεγγόμενοι οὐκ ἔσονται ἐν σοὶ· | 10 "And it shall be in that day," says the Lord, "I will utterly destroy your horses from your midst and I will ruin your chariots; 11 and I will utterly destroy the cities of your land and I will take away all your strongholds. 12 And I will take away your sorceries (pharmaka) from your hands, and there shall be no soothsayers (apophtheggomenoi) in you." |
The Destruction of Idols
| 13 "And I will utterly destroy your graven images and your sacred pillars from your midst, and you shall no longer worship the works of your hands. 14 And I will cut out your groves (alsē) from your midst and I will vanish your cities. 15 And in anger and in wrath I will execute vengeance among the nations, because they did not listen." |
