Chapter 1
The Great Assembly at Gibeon
1 And Solomon the son of David grew strong over his kingdom, and the Lord his God was with him and magnified him to a great height. 2 And Solomon spoke to all Israel—to the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and to the judges, and to all the leaders before Israel, the heads of the paternal houses. 3 And Solomon and all the assembly with him went to the high place (tēn hypsēlēn) in Gibeon, for the Tent of Testimony of God was there, which Moses the servant of the Lord had made in the wilderness. 4 However, David had brought up the Ark of God from the city of Kiriath-jearim, for he had prepared a tent for it in Jerusalem. 5 And the bronze altar which Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, had made was there in front of the Tabernacle of the Lord; and Solomon and the assembly sought it out. 6 And Solomon went up there to the bronze altar before the Lord, the one at the Tabernacle, and offered upon it a thousand whole burnt offerings.
Solomon’s Vision and Request
7 ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ἐκείνῃ ὤφθη ὁ θεὸς τῷ Σαλωμὼν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ αἴτησαι τί σοί δῶ. 7 In that night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, "Ask what I may give to you."
Solomon's Prayer for Wisdom
8 καὶ εἶπεν Σαλωμὼν πρὸς τὸν θεόν σὺ ἐποίησας μετὰ Δαυὶδ τοῦ πατρός μου ἔλεος μέγα καὶ ἐβασίλευσα με ἀντ' αὐτοῦ· 9 καὶ νῦν, κύριε ὁ θεός πιστωθήτω τὸ ὄνομά σου ἐπὶ Δαυὶδ πατέρα μου, ὅτι σὺ ἐβασίλευσα με ἐπὶ λαὸν πολὺν ὡς ὁ χοῦς τῆς γῆς· 10 νῦν σοφίαν καὶ σύνεσιν δός μοι, καὶ ἐξελεύσομαι ἐνώπιον τοῦ λαοῦ τούτου καὶ εἰσελεύσομαι· ὅτι τίς κρινεῖ τὸν λαόν σου τὸν μέγαν τοῦτον; 8 And Solomon said to God, "You have shown great mercy to David my father, and You have made me king in his place. 9 And now, Lord God, let Your name be confirmed (pistōthētō) upon David my father, for You have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth. 10 Now give me wisdom (sophian) and understanding (synesin), that I may go out and come in before this people; for who can judge this great people of Yours?"
The Divine Response
11 And God said to Solomon, "Because this was in your heart, and you did not ask for wealth, possessions, or glory, nor for the life of those who oppose you, and you did not ask for many days, but asked for yourself wisdom and understanding so that you might judge My people over whom I have made you king: 12 the wisdom and the understanding I give to you; and wealth and possessions and glory I will give to you, such as there was not among the kings before you, nor shall there be such after you."
13 And Solomon came from the high place (ek bama) in Gibeon to Jerusalem, from the presence of the Tent of Testimony, and reigned over Israel.
The Wealth and Chariots of Solomon
14 And Solomon gathered chariots and horsemen; and he had one thousand four hundred chariots and twelve thousand horsemen; and he stationed them in the chariot cities, and the people remained with the king in Jerusalem. 15 And the king made gold and silver in Jerusalem as common as stones, and cedars in Judea as abundant as the sycamores in the lowlands. 16 and the export of horses for Solomon was from Egypt, and the price was according to the king's merchants; they purchased them for trade. 17 And they went up and brought out of Egypt a chariot for six hundred [pieces] of silver and a horse for a hundred and fifty; and in this way they brought them out by their own hands to all the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Syria. 18 [MT=2:1] And Solomon gave orders to build a house for the name of the Lord and a house for his kingdom.
