(LXX 38)

To the chief Musician, even to Jeduthun, A Psalm of David.

For the end, to Idithun, a song ascribed to David. For the end, to Idithun, a song ascribed to David.

1 I said, “I will take heed to my ways, that I don't sin with my tongue; I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.”

39:1 I said,
“I will guard my ways, that I may not sin with my tongue; I placed a guard on my mouth, when the sinner unites before me.”
39:1 I said,
“I will guard my ways, that I may not sin with my tongue; I placed a guard on my mouth, when the sinner unites before me.”

2 I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.

39:2 I became mute and was humbled, and I was silent from good things, and my pain was renewed; 39:2 I became mute and was humbled, and I was silent from good things, and my pain was renewed;

3 My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue,

39:3 my heart was hot within me. And in my contemplation, a fire will burn.
I spoke with my tongue,
39:3 my heart was hot within me. And in my contemplation, a fire will burn.
I spoke with my tongue,

4 “Yahweh, make me to know my end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am.

39:4 “Make known to me, Oh Lord, my limit, and the number of my days, what it is; in order that I may know what I lack. 39:4 “Make known to me, Oh Lord, my limit, and the number of my days, what it is; in order that I may know what I lack.

5 Behold, you have made my days as a handbreadth; and my age is as nothing before you; verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.

39:5 Look, you made my days as handbreadths, and my existence is as nothing before you.
However, every man living is altogether vanity.
🎵Musical pause.
39:5 Look, you made my days as handbreadths, and my existence is as nothing before you.

6 Surely every man walks in a vain show; surely they are disquieted in vain; he heaps up riches, and doesn't know who shall gather them.

39:6 Surely, a man walks through as an apparition.
However, they are disturbed in vain.
He stores treasure and doesn't know for whom he will gather them.
39:6 Surely, a man walks through as an apparition.
However, they are disturbed in vain.
He stores treasure and doesn't know for whom he will gather them.

7 And now, Lord, what do I wait for?
My hope is in you.

39:7 Καὶ νῦν τίς ὑπομονή μου;
οὐχὶ κύριος;
39:7 καὶ νῦν τίς ὑπομονή μου;
οὐχὶ Κύριος;
39:7 And now, what is my endurance?
Is it not the Lord?
Even my existence is from you.
39:7 And now, what is my endurance?
Is it not the Lord?
Even my existence is from you.

8 Deliver me from all my transgressions; make me not the reproach of the foolish.

39:8 From all my acts of lawlessness rescue me! You have given me as a reproach to a fool. 39:8 From all my acts of lawlessness rescue me! You have given me as a reproach to a fool.

9 I was mute, I opened not my mouth; because you did it.

39:9 I was mute, and I didn't open my mouth, because it is you who made me. 39:9 I was mute, and I didn't open my mouth, because it is you who did it.

10 Remove your stroke away from me; I am consumed by the blow of your hand.

39:10 Remove your torment from me; because I fainted from the strength of your hand. 39:10 Remove your torment from me; because I fainted from the strength of your hand.

11 When you with rebukes correct man for iniquity, you make his beauty to consume away like a moth; surely every man is vanity. Selah.

39:11 With corrections for lawlessness you disciplined a man and melted his soul like a spider's web; surely, every man is in trouble for nothing. 39:11 With corrections for lawlessness you disciplined a man and melted his soul like a spider's web; surely, every man is in trouble for nothing.

12 Hear my prayer, Oh Yahweh, and give ear to my cry; hold not your peace at my tears; for I am a stranger with you, and a resident, as all my fathers were.

39:12 Hear my prayer, Oh Lord, and my petition; listen to my tears; don't be silent because I am a resident alien with you and a migrant just like all my fathers. 39:12 Hear my prayer, Oh Lord, and my petition; listen to my tears; don't be silent because I am a resident alien with you and a migrant just like all my fathers.

13 Oh spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go from here, and be no more.”

39:13 Let me be, in order that I may revive before I depart and exist no more.” 39:13 Let me be, in order that I may revive before I depart and exist no more.”
